‘Scrooge is alive and well’: Fury as ANOTHER Christmas market is cancelled amid council funding row

While the festive season is fast approaching, yet another Christmas market has been cancelled – and it seems the magic is far from in the air.Boldmere Christmas Festival has filled the town of Sutton Coldfield with excitement and enchantment for 14 years, with stalls and funfair rides. However, the event, located on the outskirts of Birmingham, has been cancelled for the second time in a row.Organisers Boldmere Futures CIC blamed a lack of funding and support from the local town council in a recent Facebook post.’The festival costs £24,000 to run and we bring in £14,000 from stalls, funfair and street food. We also take voluntary entrance donations which help support our core running costs,’ BoldmereB73 posted.’We asked for funding that would cover the shortfall and our core running costs, expecting at least a partial grant, but we weren’t offered a penny. The reason given was that the festival was not financially sustainable.’ Boldmere Christmas Festival has been called off after a lack of funding, leaving locals disappointedMany locals were devastated by the news, including one who said: ‘Scrooge is alive and well’.Another added: ‘Very disappointing and short-sighted of Sutton Town Council. Boldmere is a thriving high street and they should support it with engagement activities like these. It’s not just for Boldmere residents, people from all over Sutton attend.’A local business owner said: ‘Gutted about this! The Boldmere summer and Christmas festivals are generally my favourite event to bring my business to! Great day always!”Don’t they know it’s Christmas time at all?’ someone else quipped.Paul Long, chair of directors of Boldmere Futures CIC, told the Daily Mail: ‘After 14 years of these highly popular Christmas Festivals, it’s extremely disappointing that our Parish Council, Sutton Coldfield Town Council to whom we all pay a precept, has decided not to provide any further grant funding. ‘Like past carnivals, this feels like it will be the last nail in the coffin which will see the end of this annual cultural festival.’The Daily Mail has approached Royal Sutton Coldfield Town Council for comment. Meanwhile in Nottinghamshire, Kimberley Christmas Market has also been cancelled The town council explained the decision was based on a ‘number of factors’Meanwhile, Nottinghamshire’s Kimberley Christmas Market is yet another festive event to face cancellation. In a recent social media post, Kimberley Town Council explained that the decision ‘was incredibly difficult for us to make’ and was down to ‘a number of factors’.A lack of a ‘viable indoor venue option without presenting a financially unviable event’ was one of the hurdles, as well as ‘rising costs of Traffic Management and Security Costs as a direct result of Event Management requirements set forth by higher authorities than Kimberley Town Council’.Dwindling volunteer numbers were also cited as a contributing factor, as well as a shortage of ‘vendors and stall holders of sufficient variety to be fair to traders and visitors alike’.The council said: ‘It is incredibly sad to have to cancel any event we host in Kimberley as we know they are a great boost to local businesses and well loved by stall holders, residents and visitors. However we also have to balance that with financial viability of the event itself.’Several locals commented they were ‘disappointed’ by the news, with one calling it an ‘absolute shame’.The Daily Mail approached Kimberley Town Council for comment.  Fowey Christmas Market was provisionally scheduled to take place from December 4 to 6It comes as Fowey Christmas Market, famed for its festive atmosphere, local food and drink, handcrafted gifts and live entertainment, has also been cancelled. The event, usually held in Fowey, Cornwall, was due to run from December 4 to 6 this year. The cancellation came as a blow to visitors and local traders alike, with some already having booked accommodation specifically to attend the event.Announcing the decision on Facebook, organisers said the market’s viability had become ‘extremely challenging’ over the past five years. They added: ‘After putting our heart and soul into this event over the last 10 years, it is with a heavy heart to inform you that Fowey Christmas Market, provisionally scheduled for 4-6th December 26, will not be taking place this year.’Increased costs, operational challenges and ‘other factors outside of our control’ were cited as reasons behind the decision. An email reportedly sent out to stallholders from Live Events South West explained traders would be given a refund, minus a £50 admin fee. Last year was a difficult time for Christmas markets too: Brighton’s Winter Fayre was axed after only launching in 2024.
