It’s easy to blow your holiday budget on cruise extras, especially when you’re in the mood to relax and every add-on promises to make your trip that little bit better.But one seasoned passenger says some of them simply aren’t worth the money.Allie Hubers has taken 58 voyages over 26 years of cruising, and says she has learned which extras are worth paying for – and which are better left alone.From onboard spa treatments and drinks packages to professional photos and laundry, she has revealed the cruise add-ons she believes holidaymakers can skip – and what to do instead.Onboard spa treatments Splashing the cash for a massage on board isn’t worth itAllie wrote in Business Insider: ‘Spa treatments might seem like a tempting way to relax during your cruise, but I’ve rarely found them worth the high price.’ She explains that even though the massages, for instance, are decent, staff often employ pushy tactics to convince you to buy things such as products.Rates are often higher than on land. One Facebook user said they are ‘not worth it at all!’ while another added: ‘Very costly!’A third wrote: ‘Get one before you leave home if possible.’ What to do instead? Opt for a spa pass, which allows you to come and go as you please without being encouraged to buy anything. Drink packages Is it worth purchasing a drinks package on board a cruise? This one’s sure to divide, but Allie says she struggles to get her money’s worth when paying for drink packages.She said that when she tried them, she ended up feeling pressured to drink more than she wanted, meaning she was left feeling hungover.What to do instead? Some even hold auctions on board. But Allie says passengers should steer clear: ‘I’ve heard horror stories from cruisers who regret getting caught up in the excitement of a competitive auction.’What to do instead? Opt to support local artists when the cruise docks in a port.Professional photos On board cruises, professional photographers are on hand to capture memoriesWhile most cruises will have professional photographers to take pictures, they can be extremely expensive – and there’s a cheaper solution.She’s not the only one to feel this way. One Reddit user said: ‘I find they look like my prom photos from 2000s.’Another added: ‘If you think the price is crazy high, sounds like it’s not worth it to you. I never bought any. My phone takes pictures.’A third chimed in: ‘I am not a fan of them because I find them to be very sanitised bland boring overly posed pictures. They have no real sentimental value to me. I much prefer having pictures of my trips with people laughing, moving, being silly, looking amazed and something they see [sic]. That is where the memories lie for me.’What to do instead? It’s easy to get great pictures on your phone, Allie says, and you won’t struggle to find a fellow passenger to take the snap for you. Room service Room service is divisive – but should be avoided if it costs extraRoom service can feel like one of the ultimate holiday luxuries – but is it always worth paying extra for? Allie wrote: ‘I’d rather take a short walk than pay to have food delivered to my cabin.’Many cruise lines charge a delivery fee for orders, so it’s not worth the additional cost.What to do instead? Avoid room service and head to the dining rooms for food. The exception, Allie says, is for a complimentary continental breakfast.Laundry services Finally, paying for laundry services on board should be avoidedFor longer cruises, you might eventually need to do some laundry. But using the ship’s laundry service can quickly add up. Allie says on a recent cruise it cost $12 (£8.90) for a dress and $24 (£17.80) for a suit.What to do instead? Bring travel laundry detergent and hand wash smaller items in the sink.
