Serena Williams couldn’t wait to escape the US Open with the tennis icon reportedly bolting from Flushing Meadows immediately after defeat last week. Serena and her sister Venus Williams suffered defeat following a three-hour battle against Maya Joint and Chan Hao-ching in their first-round doubles matchup at the Grand Slam on Friday night. In the wake of the loss, the 23-time Grand Slam champion wasn’t sticking around to savour her return to Flushing Meadows. Serena ‘fled the scene’ leaving her sister and playing partner behind, according to tennis insider Ben Rothenberg. She reportedly walked off the Arthur Ashe court, out of the stadium and straight into a car that was waiting to whisk her away into the New York City night.In her haste to escape, Serena is said to have ditched Venus, who had headed to the locker room post-match, as is customary for players. However, neither of the legendary sisters appeared, incurring the wrath of fans and risking hefty fines. They might have each incurred a fine of up to $50,000, as per Grand Slam rules, unless deemed unable to appear on ‘reasonable grounds’ such as illness or injury.Yet, the US Open confirmed on Saturday however that neither player would receive a fine.Serena appeared to have snubbed the pressroom at Wimbledon in July after defeat to Joint in the singles as a wildcard but later shared that she had ‘tweaked’ her knee – an issue which forced her out of a second doubles debut with Venus in SW19.Then, Williams shared that she had been doing ‘everything’ to ensure she could return to court, posting a statement on social media before she was forced to withdraw.’It felt so good to be back on the grass at Wimbledon,’ Williams wrote on Instagram. ‘I’m incredibly thankful for the wild card – and even more grateful my daughters got to see that it’s never too late to chase something you love.
