Tennis power couple Katie Boulter and Alex de Minaur have joined the entry list for the US Open’s star-studded mixed doubles one month on from their wedding in Tuscany. The former British No1 and the world No5 married in Siena, before celebrating at the picturesque Borgo Santo Pietro luxury hotel, days after a small family ceremony in Boulter’s home county of Leicestershire. The couple are now set to try and play their first tournament as husband and wife, after previously showing off their skills in the format at Wimbledon three years ago. The US Open launched their revamped mixed doubles tournament last year with the aim of bringing a new audience to the competition on the eve of the main draw singles matches. Unlike traditional Grand Slam doubles draws, the United States Tennis Association (USTA) tempted big-name singles players to pair up, such as the much-discussed partnership of Carlos Alcaraz and Emma Raducanu. De Minaur and Boulter entered last year, but just missed out on a place in the competition in a packed field. This year, two further teams will be added after going through qualifying – for which six teams play by virtue of their ranking, with two more wildcards given out for this earlier stage. The married couple joined the entry list in a second wave of entrants, with other boldfaced name partnerships announced last month. Standout pairs all but guaranteed a spot in the main draw include world No1 Aryna Sabalenka and Novak Djokovic, Elena Rybakina and US men’s No1 Taylor Fritz, and Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud. Boulter and De Minaur are also not the only couple to have entered, with new duo Elena-Gabriela Ruse and Nuno Borges announced in the first wave, and husband and wife team Elina Svitolina and Gael Monfils joining the cohort in the second. Former British No1 Jack Draper has paired up for a second year in a row with Jessica Pegula, the US women’s No1, with the unlikely duo reaching the semi-final. Pegula shared this week that the pair had found each other again with a view to ‘running it back’, but Draper will face a nervous wait for a US Open main draw wildcard to allow him to play alongside Pegula rather than taking part in singles qualifying. New teams could yet be announced before the entry window closes on August 17, with a number of intriguing names – such as Jannik Sinner’s, Carlos Alcaraz’s and Serena Williams’ – not yet paired up. Raducanu will be unable to team up with Alcaraz for a second year in a row after news broke on Monday that the British No1 will not be able to compete in New York at all as she continues to recover from her grade four stress fracture. Despite its eye-popping $1million prize, the new-look mixed doubles features a shortened format that allows for multiple matches to be played across the two night sessions. Until the semi-finals, best-of-three matches will feature sets played to four, with no-advantage scoring and a 10-point tiebreak in lieu of a third set. From then on, matches are played to six games.
