After falling into a coma after collapsing during an outdoor team workout, Arizona State hockey player Matthew Mayich does not appear to have a positive outlook.In an interview with The Arizona Republic, the family’s lawyer Robert Carey says that Mayich had ‘zero chance of recovery.’Carey provided a follow-up to Adam Wodon of College Hockey News, clarifying, ‘He is incapacitated and has almost no real chance of recovering from that situation.’The incident on August 20 saw Mayich collapse while running outdoors at the school’s track in near-90 degree heat. Carey said Mayich ‘was disoriented and struggled well before he collapsed.’Mayich, who was selected by the St. Louis Blues in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL Draft, was taken to a local hospital and now resides at Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix.Carey is conducting his own investigation and is pushing back on the ‘narrative’ Arizona State claims about ‘how minimal, how soft and how easy’ the workout was. He deserves, and his family deserves, a proper investigation.’In a separate interview with the Republic, Ziesel said he left the workout before Mayich collapsed. An attorney representing him said: ‘This was not a Green Beret or SEAL workout. Far from it. The head coach, assistant coaches and medical were always present.’ Carey adds that players were allegedly told not to complain and that water was only available to people who led exercises. The lawyer also says players feared retaliation – including loss of scholarships or positions – if they spoke out.Carey is requesting coaches and staff be suspended or put on administrative leave in order for ASU to speak with players and conduct an investigation.A spokesperson for the school told the Republic they are ‘reviewing everything surrounding the workout.’ Mayich, a Canadian who previously played with the Ottawa 67’s in the major junior Ontario Hockey League, transferred to Arizona State from Clarkson University.With Clarkson, Mayich scored seven goals and eight assists across 34 games.
