Jamie Carragher has urged Liverpool’s summer signings from last year to do better or face being branded as the worst collection of transfers in Premier League history. The Reds spent £445million ahead of the 2025-26 campaign as they looked to defend their Premier League title won in 2024-25.Liverpool broke the Premier League record twice that summer – signing Florian Wirtz for £116million before then breaking that to sign Alexander Isak for £125m.On top of that expensive duo, the Anfield outfit splashed the cash on Hugo Ekitike (£79m), Milos Kerkez (£40m), Jeremie Frimpong (£29.5m), Giorgi Mamardashvili (£29m) and Giovanni Leoni (£26m).Despite that huge outlay, the Reds could only finish a disappointing fifth in the Premier League and a mammoth 25 points behind champions Arsenal. The manner of their performances saw manager Arne Slot sacked at the end of the season with Andoni Iraola replacing him earlier this summer. And reflecting on last summer’s transfer recruitment, Carragher insists all of them – bar Ekitike – must buck up their ideas in their second seasons at the club. Jamie Carragher believes Liverpool’s 2025 summer signings could go down as the worst in Premier League history if they don’t improve this season The Reds spent a whopping £445million last summer but could only finish fifth in the league Carragher believes only Hugo Ekitike (left) performed for the Reds last season, while the likes of Alexander Isak (centre) and Florian Wirtz have to do a lot better’My fear of watching Liverpool yesterday [Sunday], and it’s the first game of the season, is this window of 12 months ago could set Liverpool back a year or two to fix it,’ he said on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football.’Now don’t forget last season it was not about these players. You [pointing to fellow pundit Gary Neville] said on the [Gary Neville] podcast yesterday that these players have got off lightly and you’re right because it was all about Arne Slot and his style of play and he’s not like Jurgen Klopp and he’s holding these players back.’Yes it’s one game with Iraola, but we’re talking 12 months of underperformance from all of these players except him [Ekitike].’If this doesn’t change in the next two or three months under Iraola and these players improving, I think we’re going to be looking at that as arguably the worst transfer window we’ve probably seen in Premier League history when you consider the fees for these players and what they were going to do for Liverpool.’The idea of these players wasn’t just coming in to be good players it was to create a little dynasty for Liverpool. Let’s not forget, Liverpool won the league two years ago, these were supposed to do what [Manchester] City have done in the past few years, or [Manchester] United, where they win two or three leagues in five years.’Carragher’s damning words come a day after Neville – who said ‘wow’ in reply to his colleague’s view – sought out Wirtz and Isak for criticism following Liverpool’s 2-2 draw at Newcastle. Both failed to shine with Wirtz hooked after 63 minutes, while Isak failed to perform against a backdrop of vitriol in his first appearance back at St James’ Park since his acrimonious exit last year. And reflecting on their output, Neville believes the pair are ‘too nice’ and need a nastier side to their game. Wirtz (left) and Isak (right) came under-fire from Gary Neville after Liverpool’s draw on Sunday Neville believes both are ‘too nice’ and has warned them they need to improve due to their fees’The big thing for Liverpool is they’ve got a quarter-of-a-billion-pound front-two, Isak and Wirtz, and bloody hell we’ve been kind to them,’ the Manchester United legend said on his Gary Neville Podcast.’They are going to have to start playing soon or else to be fair they’re going to get a lot of criticism. They’re going to have to start delivering.’For a start they’re too nice and if you’re going to be nice, you better be incredible at football.’I don’t see a tenacity in Wirtz in particular – Isak maybe a bit more – but in Wirtz I just see a nice player moving around the pitch, not really ever looking like he’s busting a gut to do anything.’Expanding further about Wirtz, Neville wants the playmaker to sharpen up – insisting he wants to put a ‘rocket up him’ at times due to his languid style on the pitch, adding that he needs to redefine his role to start producing goals and assists.’You have players that are more graceful that just flow around the pitch – like [Mesut] Ozil and [Kai] Havertz – but I want to put a rocket up him,’ he continued. Speaking about Wirtz, Neville said he would like to put a ‘rocket’ up the £116million signing’There’s ability and talent there and an understanding of his position. Sometimes I think he moves too much and isn’t close enough to his striker. Sometimes I don’t think he understands where the game is going to be won and lost.’I don’t see him combining with Isak. So for me, and I’ve said this for 12 months, he drifts too much. I just feel like Wirtz has got to think about being involved in the build-up less, he’s got to think about being a second striker rather than a third midfield player, and has got to think about his output and what he needs to do, which is feed Isak with little passes and down the side of centre backs.’They’ve got to improve. I’m laying it on them now as I’ve watched them for 12 months but I have faith in them. I think Isak is an exceptional player – I never saw anyone give Gabriel and Saliba, or Van Dijk and Konate, a tougher time than he did when he was at Newcastle – so I’ve seen him be devastating.’Liverpool’s team-mates and coaches need to see that because it’s £125m, and Wirtz needs to sort himself out. Enough is enough now. He’s young and come into a different country and I can see a real player there, but we can’t keep watching this stuff. He’s been subbed after an hour and they need a goal. That’s not right. The biggest disappointment for me is those two.’Wirtz and Isak can let their feet do the talking on Saturday when Liverpool host Nottingham Forest in the 12.30pm kick-off.
