Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea reign got off to a winning start with a 3-2 victory at west-London rivals Fulham.Chelsea took the lead within seconds when Joao Pedro broke the deadlock before Josh King equalised midway through the first half after a Robert Sanchez error. After half-time Chelsea pulled into a 3-1 lead thanks to goals from Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer, before Gonzalo Garcia reduced the deficit for Fulham. However, they were unable to find an equaliser.Daily Mail Sport’s KIERAN GILL was at Craven Cottage to run the rule over both teams.Fulham (4-2-3-1)Bernd Leno – 5Leno is not the first goalkeeper to be left helpless when Joao Pedro is through. Deserted his goal as Morgan Rogers blasted in. Nutmegged by Cole Palmer for Chelsea’s third.Timothy Castagne – 5Rogers was all on his own to score Chelsea’s second as Fulham’s defenders were ball-watching and dropping towards their goal rather than guarding the threats in their box.Calvin Bassey – 5Fulham captain. We imagine Alvaro Arbeloa will be playing back some of these conceded goals for his defenders in the coming days. Booked for diving in a bid to win an attacking free-kick. Calvin Bassey and his defenders are set to be shown their errors which led to Chelsea’s goalsJorge Cuenca – 5Defenders can be skinned. No shame in that. But by another defender? Oof. Now that’s hard to take. Maxence Lacroix turned Cuenca, crossed, and Rogers made it 2-1.Antonee Robinson – 5Did not have the easiest evening trying to tame Palmer. Only had to lob the stranded Sanchez to make it 3-3 in the 78th minute but got his angles wrong when through on goal and sent it wide.Josh King – 7Loved a driven rocket from distance. Robert Sanchez saved his first crack unconvincingly, so he kept going, until he finally beat Chelsea’s goalkeeper from 20 yards. Josh King provided an attacking threat for Fulham and scored their opener with this driven shotSander Berge – 5Unlike his midfield partner, he was reluctant to try his luck from distance, even when the Fulham fans were encouraging him to do so. Not much creativity to his game.Oscar Bobb – 6Thought he was through until Levi Colwill brought him down, cynically so. Five metres closer to Chelsea’s goal and his opponent might have been in bother. Replaced by Shea Charles.Alex Iwobi – 6Was dropping rather deep considering he should have been adding a threat to a Fulham attack which had Chelsea predominantly worried from out wide.Cesar Palacios – 6The new £8.6m arrival from Real Madrid. Fortunate to avoid a booking when he dragged down Palmer to kill a potential attack. Lasted 73 minutes until Arbeloa changed it up.Gonzalo Garcia – 6.5Another £34m newbie from Real. Reacted like a flash when Sanchez palmed a shot back into the danger area as Garcia headed in to make it 3-2 and get himself off the mark. Gonzalo Garcia showed his goalscoring instinct by reacting quickest to score Fulham’s secondSUBS USEDShea Charles (for Bobb, 67 mins) – 6Young summer signing was introduced to try to help Fulham find a way back in, and we like seeing him in the central areas more than Berge.Kevin (for Palacios, 73) – 6That opportunity to get Fulham back into the game never arrived for the substitute.Ryan Sessegnon (for Berge, 73) – 6Fulham tried, and did put pressure on the visitors, but could never get that breakthrough.Rodrigo Muniz (for Robinson, 82) – N/ASUBS NOT USED: Benjamin Lecomte, Kenny Tete, Harrison Reed, Emile Smith Rowe, Luc De FourgerollesMANAGER: Alvaro Arbeloa – 6CHELSEA (3-4-2-1)Robert Sanchez – 4Chelsea fans may be saying: ‘Told you so.’ They have called for a new goalkeeper for a while now, and Sanchez was weak in both of the goals he conceded here. Still time to sign a new one… Robert Sanchez’s form from last season has carried over as he was at fault for Fulham’s goalsJosh Acheampong – 7The Cobham graduate, 20, had to produce several blocks in the first half as Fulham grew into this game. Chelsea are debating whether to loan him away. He is ready for more regular minutes.Maxence Lacroix – 7.5Why the £52m summer signing was practically playing a right winger momentarily, we’re not entirely sure, but he turned Cuenca for a lovely assist for Rogers. Blocks galore at the end, too.Levi Colwill – 6Yellow carded for hacking down Oscar Bobb inside five minutes when Fulham fans wanted a red for DOGSO. Failed in a defensive header before the home side’s second goal from Garcia.Malo Gusto – 6A minor injury meant there was no Marco Palestra, with Gusto manning the right-hand side. Tiring job in Xabi Alonso’s system. Pedro Neto replaced him for the final 15 minutes.Reece James – 6.5A minor setback ruled Moises Caicedo out of contention as Chelsea’s captain was used in midfield instead. Accused King of faking a foul which earned him a caution. Reece James was deployed in central midfield and controlled thing from there for ChelseaRomeo Lavia – 6.5With Enzo Fernandez on the bench, Lavia added aggression into midfield, crunching Calvin Bassey to earn himself an early yellow.Jorrel Hato – 6.5A new position for him at left wing back but he flew forward when he could, one such sprint nearly making it 4-1 to Chelsea. Being timed out for a throw-in was not appreciated by his team-mates.Cole Palmer – 8Like his old, cold, creative self. First-time pass in behind allowed Joao Pedro to sprint and score. Was twisting and turning Robinson and Co at will. Then he grabbed the goal he deserved. Cole Palmer reminded England boss Thomas Tuchel what he missed out on at the World CupMorgan Rogers – 7The £117m man. While he was signed for what he adds to the attack, he allowed King to run off him for Fulham’s 1-1 leveller. But got his goal after Lacroix’s lovely assist.Joao Pedro – 7.5After eight goals in eight games in pre-season, he took 31 seconds to score here, a delicate dink over Bernd Leno. Nearly volleyed in a second to Palmer’s cross before half-time.SUBS USEDEnzo Fernandez (for Lavia, 65) – 6Booed by all of Craven Cottage – but not the Chelsea away end. They applauded him and sang his name. Now to see what happens between now and the summer window closing.Pep Chavarria (for Hato, 65) – 6Making his Chelsea debut, could not get too far forward with a great deal of defending to do.Pedro Neto (for Gusto, 76) – N/AGeovany Quenda (for Rogers, 83) – N/AEstevao (for Palmer, 83) – N/ASUBS NOT USED: Mike Penders, Valentin Barco, Jamie Gittens, Danny WelbeckMANAGER: Xabi Alonso – 7REFEREE: John Brooks – 6
