Sussex have signed Joey Evison on a multi-year deal from 2027 in a landmark move ratified by the ECB.Under the spending restrictions the ECB placed upon Sussex for recording an operating loss of £1.33million last year, county cricket’s managing director Rob Andrew must approve new player signings at Hove until the end of the 2028 season.Evison is the first arrival of this period, having found chances to play in his favoured role increasingly limited at Kent, partly due to the emergence of another ex-England Under 19s all-rounder in Ekansh Singh. In his two most recent County Championship appearances for the club, Evison was carded at No 8, the same position he occupied in the one-day loss to Gloucestershire on Sunday. The 24-year-old is leaving Kent with a year remaining on his contract after a deal was struck that is financially favourable to both clubs. Viewing batting as the stronger of his two suits, he went on loan to Leicestershire last month, striking 55 in the innings win over Yorkshire and claiming combined figures of three for 87 across two appearances.Evison was touted as one of the country’s brightest prospects when Kent signed him from Nottinghamshire four years ago and some supporters will be disappointed that a player with 14 half centuries in 45 first-class appearances at an average of 31.65 is departing the club early. Sussex have signed Kent all-rounder Joey Evison, who had to go on loan to Leicestershire this month after being unable to get into the team The 24-year-old won man of the match in the 2022 One-Day Cup final as Kent beat Lancashire at Trent BridgeHe also has 68 wickets at 43 and two Metro Bank Cup hundreds on his CV, winning man of the match in the 2022 final when Kent beat Lancashire at Trent Bridge. The move reunites him with his former Kent coach Matt Walker, who is taking over from Paul Farbrace at Sussex next season. With all-rounders Fynn Hudson-Prentice, who is joining Hampshire, and Danny Lamb among those leaving the club in the next few weeks, opportunities should be plentiful.Sussex are also in talks to add Middlesex seamer Blake Cullen to a group that will be without Tom Alsop in 2027 after a deal was struck with Gloucestershire. Daily Mail Sport first flagged the potential move for the left-hander in April, when it was announced Ben Charlesworth would be swapping Bristol for Lancashire next year.Alsop, 30, had 12 months remaining on his deal with Sussex and will continue to live in Hove, but is moving early on a three-year deal having been limited to two Division One outings this summer due to the form of Tom Clark at No 3.Sussex have already lost rising fast bowling star Henry Crocombe to Surrey, a signing that concluded a scramble among Test-hosting counties. Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire also went in strongly for the 24-year-old, who was called into England’s second Test squad against New Zealand last month as cover for county team-mate Ollie Robinson.A knock-on of that business was James Taylor agreeing to leave Surrey for Yorkshire, scuppering Worcestershire’s plan to pair him with his brother Tom in a new-look new-ball attack next season. Somerset, Gloucestershire and Glamorgan were also interested.Potts stays put Daily Mail Sport understands Matthew Potts has committed his future to Durham beyond September following enquiries from Yorkshire. The Sunderland-born England seamer, 27, is looking to regain his place in the national team after a tricky Ashes last winter Down Under. Daily Mail Sport understands Matthew Potts has committed his future to Durham beyond September following enquiries from YorkshirePatterson-White is Notts for sale Another north-easterner in Liam Patterson-White is also staying put with Nottinghamshire, signing a three-year contract after listening to an offer from Warwickshire, who failed to replace the experienced Danny Briggs when he returned to Sussex last winter.Slow left-armer Patterson-White is comfortably the most prolific spin bowler across the Championship’s two divisions this summer, with 32 wickets at under 24 runs each.Midlands battle for keeper CoxNottinghamshire and Warwickshire are understood to be contesting the capture of 34-year-old wicketkeeper Ben Cox, who is leaving Leicestershire in September.Only the Hampshire-bound Rishi Patel has scored more top-flight runs for the Foxes than the 530 contributed by Cox in 2026.Shaikh up at Leicestershire Leicestershire have made an investment for the future by snapping up Warwickshire’s ex-England Under 19s captain Hamza Shaikh on a three-year contract from 2027, while spinner Liam Trevaskis’ future at Grace Road remains uncertain.Hampshire eye new deals for key batsmen One soon-to-be free agent whose negotiating position has improved significantly in recent weeks, though, is Hampshire batsman Joe Weatherley, the most prolific run-scorer in this year’s T20 Blast. While Ali Orr is expected to leave the Utilita Bowl for Middlesex, Weatherley enjoys working with coach Russell Domingo and is understood to be keen to stay, particularly if his preference to bat lower down the order in four-day cricket is met.Hampshire’s T20 captain James Vince is finalising a new deal with the club that is complicated not by financial demands, but the limited number of days he is permitted to work in the UK now that he is a resident of the United Arab Emirates for tax purposes. Hampshire batsman Joe Weatherley enjoys working with coach Russell Domingo and is understood to be keen to stayIndian duo snapped up With the Championship returning in three weeks, counties have turned their attention for recruitment for the season finale, with Yorkshire securing India’s left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav for three September fixtures following a five-match Metro Bank Cup stint, and Gloucestershire welcoming his compatriot Ravi Sai Kishore – who bagged 11 wickets in two matches for Surrey last year – for the final six rounds.Gloucestershire are rooted to the foot of the Division Two table, 43 points behind second-bottom Lancashire, but director of cricket Jon Lewis says the arrival of Sai Kishore is an indication of their desire to avoid the wooden spoon.Who’ll Toole up for 2027? One other potential signing for this period of the campaign is Ray Toole, the left-armer who was the leading wicket-taker in New Zealand’s Plunket Shield last winter.Toole, 28, previously played for Essex and Durham and is known to be of interest to several counties for 2027. However, with the crammed county schedule affording just two-day gaps between first-class matches, he could yet be snapped up on a shorter-term deal covering this August and September.
