Ryan Moore declared Scandinavia an ‘unbelievable stayer’ after the Ascot Gold Cup winner continued his inexorable march towards flat racing greatness with a decisive victory in a dramatic Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup. The Aidan O’Brien-trained son of Justify, game winner of the Group 1 prize 12 months ago, was expected to face stiff competition defending his crown with Ascot runner-up Trawlerman again in opposition.However, a re-enactment of the Royal meeting’s titanic tussle failed to materialise as Scandinavia powered eight and a half lengths clear of the front-running Trawlerman, himself intermittently hampered by the riderless Amiloc who lost rider Hector Crouch exiting the stalls. The Goodwood stewards deemed that Amiloc was a runner and, while Moore felt his ongoing presence had little impact on the race, Trawlerman’s rider William Buick felt the incident affected him valuable momentum.’It definitely had an effect and it’s unfortunate. If he is okay, why not?’ SAM TURNER’S TIPS Goodwood, 15:00 – Planet Seeker each-wayRalph Beckett enjoyed two winners in this race 12 months ago when his pair of three-year-olds dead heated and he could reprise that success with Planet Seeker here.The daughter of Blue Point was a game winner on debut at today’s venue last season when scoring narrowly over six furlongs and she has continued her progression this term, including when comfortably landing a handicap on the July Course last time.Winning a race of that nature off a mark of 85 is a mile away from what is required to land this Group 3, but the assessor was sufficiently impressed to raise Beckett’s progressive filly to 95 off the back of that decisive three and a half length success and she could improve again granted conditions which clearly suit.Goodwood, 15:35 – PershaadaI was present at Goodwood in May when Pershaada bolted up on her third career start and she could prove the answer to this Group 3 prize back at a venue which suited her so well.The selection posted a clear career best at Ascot last time when finishing a highly commendable fourth in the Queen Mary at a sizeable price and, although she won’t be anything like those odds here, she should appreciate this drop in class.Goodwood, 17:40 – Crimson Spirit each-wayThe booking of Ryan Moore for Goodwood lover Crimson Spirit looks significant in this well-contested finale and a solid effort at Newmarket on his latest start may have set up the selection for a second course win here.The Kubler’s nimble gelding saves all his best efforts for switchback tracks like Goodwood, Epsom and Brighton so this terrain holds no terrors for a horse which has bright each-way prospects.
