The humble village dubbed ‘St Tropez of Cornwall’ where the rich and famous – like Gordon Ramsay – keep buying homes… but locals aren’t happy

In the St Tropez of Cornwall, you’d expect pristine beaches, upmarket dining establishments and perhaps the odd under-the-radar celebrity. As such, construction work so loud that the peaceful seaside ambience is ruined is not a welcome addition.Rock in Cornwall has become a veritable A-list haven, with the rich and famous descending on the picturesque village in their droves – taking it from humble and down-to-earth to a millionaire’s playground. It’s one of Cornwall’s richest villages, too, adding further credit to its nickname ‘England’s St Tropez’. Others refer to Rock as ‘the Kensington of Cornwall’, in a nod to the affluent London suburb. One of the highest-profile residents is none other than celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay. Rock in Cornwall has been labelled as ‘England’s St Tropez’ and ‘the Kensington of Cornwall’ Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay bought a £4.4million beachside mansion in Rock on the north Cornwall coastIt’s not just Gordon Ramsay that lives in Rock – fellow celebrity chef Paul Ainsworth owns The Mariners pub in the region.Plus, comedian Jack Whitehall has been known to stay in the area. While Gordon’s no stranger to bad press given his aggressive approach to the kitchen, it seems something else is bothering locals – his constant building works. Gordon bought a house in Rock, which he swiftly redeveloped – much to the discontent of his neighbours. He bought two homes in Rock for £4.4 million in 2015, and won an eight-month battle to bulldoze the property and revamp it by July the following year.YouTubers Sarah and Andrew told Cornwall Live: ‘He’s had lots of objections from people who did not want this monstrosity, as they called it. ‘His neighbours were up in arms when they found out that he was going to demolish the historically impressive 1920s Arts and Crafts-style house and replace it with a modern villa with white walls and a zinc facade, comprising a gym, pool, cellar, and a guest annexe.’Speaking on Zoe Ball’s BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show at the time, Gordon said: ‘Trust me, I absolutely love Cornwall, it’s just the Cornish I can’t stand.’ Evidently, Gordon hasn’t endeared himself to the locals – whether that’s down to his building work or attitude, however, is uncertain.  The immaculate swimming pool on display at Gordon’s revamped Rock home Paul Ainsworth owns Rock’s The Mariners pub, a well-rated establishmentThe building work across town is ongoing – with many luxury properties undergoing redevelopment. In a clip from Sarah and Andrew’s channel Cornish Walking Trails, titled ‘Gordon Ramsay upsets Cornwall’s Richest Village! – What’s the attraction of Rock?’, you can hear the sound of construction going on as they stroll through the area.In the video from April this year, Sarah says: ‘You might have noticed the construction noise in the background.’Seems to be the thing with the places that attract a lot of interest from celebrities and wealthier people. ‘They come down, buy an older property, and the first thing they want to do is knock it down and build to their own specification.’Hence the noise in the background, it’s probably going to be all through this village.’
