The European flight routes most likely to cause travel stress – with almost half of the worst featuring UK airports

British travellers looking for a stress-free getaway have been warned to pay close attention to which airport they fly from. A new analysis of major European air routes has revealed the worst paths for nervous flyers, highlighting which journeys are the most stressful.AirAdvisor’s 2026 Nervous Flyer Index analysed 26 major European routes using data from September 2025 to August 2026. It examines factors that can intensify passenger anxiety before and during a journey: severe delays of more than three hours, cancellations, weather exposure at both airports and total flight duration. The ranking measures potential travel stress and unpredictability, not flight safety or turbulence risk. The findings put the UK firmly at the centre of Europe’s flight-disruption picture. It found that London Heathrow and Manchester Airport sit at the centre of some of Europe’s most anxiety-provoking routes. The worst routes for nervous flyers have been revealed, highlighting the most stressful journeys Amsterdam to Barcelona was ranked as the most stressful route in the study from AirAdvisorFour routes involving British airports appear among the top 10 routes in the ranking, including three involving London Heathrow.Amsterdam-Barcelona remains Europe’s highest-scoring route overall at 75.1/100, but Britain claims both of the study’s most extreme individual disruption figures.Heathrow-Amsterdam has Europe’s highest cancellation rate: the route ranks as the second-most stressful in Europe, with a ‘Nervous Flyer Score’ of 63.8/100. Its 3.69 per cent cancellation rate is the highest of any route analysed and more than 2.5 times the average among the top 20 routes. Manchester to Dublin (MAN-DUB) ranks third overall with a score of 63.4/100, but its delay figures are the most striking. A total of 7.51 per cent of flights were delayed by more than an hour, while 0.84 per cent were delayed by more than three hours – the highest delay rates in the top 20.Two other Heathrow routes feature in the top 10: Heathrow-Frankfurt ranks eighth and Madrid-Heathrow tenth. Anton Radchenko, CEO of AirAdvisor, said: ‘The purpose of this ranking isn’t to tell nervous passengers which routes to avoid. ‘It’s to show where some of the factors that create uncertainty are more common, so travellers can plan for them and feel better prepared.’Across the 20 highest-ranked routes, the average proportion of flights delayed by more than an hour was 4.29 per cent, while cancellations averaged 1.35 per cent. Heathrow-Amsterdam therefore recorded a cancellation rate well above the group average, while Manchester-Dublin’s hour-plus delay rate was nearly twice the top-20 average.
