A British man was left with his leg ‘dangling off’ after a motorbike crash in Thailand and now faces thousands of pounds in medical bills. Darren Cummins, 34, went on holiday to the popular Asian destination in 2015 and loved it so much he stayed, leaving behind his hometown of Falkirk, Scotland. He often rides his motorbike to see the ‘beauty’ of the country but one trip, on June 13, led to him getting into a 100kph collision with a car that allegedly did a U-turn into oncoming traffic.Claiming his leg took the ‘brunt of the impact’, the business development consultant said his ankle and five inches of his tibia were smashed and ‘scattered across the road’.Now, the Brit has racked up £22,000 in medical bills so far and needs three surgeries before rehabilitation. He says the incident has turned his and his girlfriend’s life ‘upside down’ and is concerned he may never walk properly again. ‘I’m living a nightmare right now, I still can’t wrap my head around the fact that this has happened to me,’ Cummins said. Darren Cummins, 34, was seriously injured in a motorbike in Thailand He suffered a compound fracture at the top of his tibia, losing five inches of bone, comminuted fractures on his ankle and shin as well as losing the use of his Achilles tendonHe recalled how the driver ‘was travelling in the opposite direction to me so he was on the other side of the triple carriageway and he wanted to do a U-turn’.’Unfortunately he decided to cut across all three lanes, he drove straight across horizontally,’ he added.’The problem is there were two cars barely in front of me and staggered so he’s probably seen those two cars and thought he could probably clear them.’I didn’t actually see him until he passed the second car, who was the one in the middle lane.’Cummins didn’t see the car until it was around a metre in front of him, making it ‘impossible’ to avoid the impact. He said: ‘My leg took the brunt of the impact but had that been any other part of my body, whether it was my chest or my head, then I wouldn’t be here right now.’I lost five inches of tibia, smashed out of my knee, [it] scattered across the road. I’m lucky to be here.’I was in and out of consciousness, I was in shock, I was thrown approximately 30 yards from my motorbike.’ He often goes out on his motorbike to see the ‘beauty’ of the country, which he moved to in 2015 But now, Cummins faces £22,000 in medical bills and the possibility that he won’t be able to walk properly againHe recalls seeing his ‘leg just dangling off’ and ‘was screaming uncontrollably’.’The next thing I know I was at the hospital with a gas mask on,’ the Brit added. On his GoFundMe page, Cummins wrote ‘the last thing I ever wanted was to become ‘that foreigner in Thailand’ asking for help’, but after exhausting all his savings ‘swallowed his pride’ and set up the fundraiser. He suffered a compound fracture at the top of his tibia, losing five inches of bone, comminuted fractures on his ankle and shin as well as losing the use of his Achilles tendon. Cummins described the ordeal as a ‘horrific experience’ and said: ‘It’s less than likely that I’ll ever properly walk again, there’s always a small chance.”I’ve started crying myself to sleep over it because my life’s just changed in an instant, I hope I can walk again.’The Brit describes himself as a ‘motorbike guy’ but said: ‘I probably won’t be able to get back on my motorbike again.”The hospital that did accept my case, they’ve already exceeded the estimate that they gave me, which was 600,500 baht, so like £15,000,’ he added.’Every single procedure now we get hounded for money before they work on me – even if it’s an emergency you have to have the money.’
