The summer of the caravan? There are plenty of ways to upgrade yours on a budgetHayley Rubery, 35, from Essex, has made something of a name for herself in the online world by sharing her budget-friendly renovation projects – so much so that she’s been dubbed ‘The Caravan Girl’ by her loyal following. Having moved to Norwich with her boyfriend Ben eight years ago for a slower pace of life, she found the creative freedom and financial flexibility to tap into the art of thrifting and upcycling – turning unwanted items into something special. According to Hayley, who renovates old caravans in her spare time, transforming a tired motorhome from drab to fab doesn’t have to cost a fortune. In fact, she says it can be done for less than £1,000.Here’s our top guide to upgrading your caravan – on a budget – and with some hints and tips from the Caravan Girl herself… The power of paintFew minor upgrades will make as much of a difference as a new coat of paint.Hayley told the Daily Mail: ‘I think it’s really amazing what a lick of paint can do. We painted the outside of ours white with £100 worth of paint and sprayed a green stripe down the side using a £20 can from Amazon – it looked so cool.’It’s one of the easiest ways to reinvent your space – both inside and out. Choose your colours wisely, focusing on subtle shades that will elevate the area, especially if you are focusing on the interiors. And with options starting from just £10 for a can of paint, you can’t go wrong. Floor tilesPeel-and-stick floor tiles are popular among renters as they can be easily removed, but they can also be adopted in caravan decor for a cheap and cheerful upgrade.Hayley said: ‘We also buy stick-on floor tiles for £35 from TikTok Shop – we’ve used these in our own kitchen and they’re so good.’If you’re looking for something more permanent, opt for floor tiles at low prices from companies such as Wickes.Cool curtainsTo keep costs low, Hayley retained the caravan’s existing layout and worked her magic with new additions such as fresh curtains. These can make a huge difference – altering your interiors from ‘grandma’s living room’ to ‘modern living space’.Door handlesHayley explained: ‘I always try to keep as much of the original caravan as I can, so I’ll give the sofa cushions a deep clean, switch out the door handles, and spruce up the cupboards.’ Something as simple as brand new door knobs can elevate a space.Ikea and Dunelm have some great options that won’t set you back too much. Fine furnishings… and all the trimmings!Improved furnishings can be the difference between a tired look and a revamped sense of style. Hayley said: ‘I love a bargain and I love shopping second-hand. With older caravans, everything’s wooden and sort of blends into one. But, if you can change that one simple thing, it can make a massive difference.’ One option is to buy new pillows, cushions and soft furnishings – anything from upgraded frames and artwork to kitchen decor.Poundland and Home Bargains are great places to start.
