A frustrated Gary Neville has again accused Manchester United’s players of lacking effort in their draw with Tottenham and warned they risk being ‘eaten alive’ by Atletico Madrid in midweek if they don’t buck their ideas up.The Red Devils were twice booed off at Old Trafford on Saturday evening as they conceded a late equaliser against ten-man Spurs to take their winless run to four games in all competitions. But there seems to be a lack of fight from the team, according to Neville, with fans already questioning the side’s desire to run after Youri Tielemans said they didn’t do much work in that area of the game over pre-season.Coupled with United’s poor running numbers so far this season, and there are serious questions around the team’s play – and Neville has once again taken aim.’What United fans won’t accept is what they deem as a lack of effort and the reality is they’re not running enough, they’re not showing enough tenacity, determination and fighting spirit,’ he said on The Gary Neville Podcast. ‘The boos tell you they are really despondent with what they are watching.’What we are seeing at the moment is a team that looks like they are curling up in a ball and the club, for some of them right now, is getting a bit big for them. Gary Neville has told Manchester United’s players to ‘get a grip’ following their draw with Tottenham on Saturday United are winless in four and were poor against 10-man Spurs, who scored a last-minute goal’The shake of Carrick’s head will be… are they doing it for me? What’s happening with that lot? Have they lost their confidence? Have they switched off? Are they going under? What is going on? Because these aren’t the players I was working with last season.’United will face Atletico in midweek in the Champions League and face the prospect of a tough task at the Metropolitano despite a win in their first match of the Champions League league phase.Atletico are second in LaLiga and beat Real Madrid in the Madrid derby the week before the international break. There is also, meanwhile, concern around United’s personnel – particularly in midfield. Something that Neville thinks needs to be looked at.’With (Youri) Tielemans and (Kobbie) Mainoo, I think we’ve seen enough of it now,’ Neville said. ‘I’m not calling time on it because I think that’s probably too drastic – but I’ve seen enough of it to think it’s not dynamic enough to play at this football club in the Premier League. They are both good players individually but sometimes you have players who just don’t quite knit together and suit each other.’When (Carlos) Baleba came on with Mainoo, that certainly looked more like there was more energy but there is going to have to be something done in there and the rest of them are going to have to get a grip.’They’re going to Atletico and then to Elland Road, and if you’re not quite right there mentally and physically, you’re going to get found out. If they don’t get going, it’s going to be a worrying few weeks.’ Neville also said it’s time for United to stop playing Youri Tielemans (left) and Kobbie Mainoo (right) in midfield together Michael Carrick’s side will head to Spain to take on Atletico Madrid in the Champions League this weekSpeaking on United’s lack of apparent effort, he added: ‘It is a real concern, going into a slog where you are playing every three days and the Champions League is going to hit you hard.’You’ve got tough matches and all of the games coming up are going to need real personality and character, and it needs a group of players who are resilient and at the moment you do worry about them going into that run of matches and how they are going to come out of it.’That three-week break was supposed to be a reset moment. But how you can perform like that in the first 20 minutes is really difficult to understand.’
