The huge story shaking the World Cup over the last few days involving Donald Trump’s intervention and FIFA suspending USA star Folarin Balogun’s red card escalated to an international incident everyone is talking about. But it was the Belgians who had the last laugh. They sliced through for the opener before a deflected free-kick from Malik Tillman brought the hosts level but after that it was one-way traffic. Charles de Ketelaere headed his second before a humiliating series of blunders allowed Hans Vanaken to make it three and Romelu Lukaku fired in a fourth. The big striker even rubbed salt in the wounds by performing the ‘Trump dance’ in celebration. Mauricio Pochettino’s side, after all the furore in the build-up, did not show up and were brutally dumped out of their home tournament. Belgium will play Spain in the quarter-finals. READ DAN MATTHEWS’ REPORT HERE

VIEW FROM THE GROUNDThe magazine cover image has been staring out at me at every airport from Los Angeles to Philadelphia this last month or so, parading David Beckham’s first billion. Out of curiosity, I eventually picked it up and leafed through, wondering if there really was anything more to say about the most ubiquitous man at the World Cup, who’s hawked himself around as a figurehead for everything from Bank of America to Lays Crisps and DIY’s Home Depot and Stella Artois beer. World Cup hydration break? Then it will be Beckham-time. At least one of the ensuing TV ads will feature him.The Forbes article actually did offer more detail – on the effort Beckham puts into his money-making. The magazine’s interview with him coincides with back-to-back photoshoots at his mansion, set up by his own production firm Studio 99, for a speaker company and an appliance maker. Several more are scheduled for the ensuing days. The US World Cup economy’s obsession with a 51-year-old who retired from the game 13 years ago seems to illustrate an existential dependence on the global marketing properties – Beckham, [Lionel] Messi, [Cristiano] Ronaldo, [Kylian] Mbappe – to get cut through in the avalanche of soccer content. Excellent new players just don’t do it any more. ‘I’m building things to outlast me,’ Beckham says in the Forbes piece. And yes, the crisps and the beer and the DIY stores really will all still be here when he’s gone.Ian Herbert TEAM OF THE DAY Supplied by Sofascore.CELEBRITY WATCHIt’s not often you have a spectator worth more than all the highly paid players on the pitch combined. But Jeff Bezos, the Amazon founder and business tycoon who boasts a net worth of £195billion, was in attendance for the USA’s humiliation at the hands of Belgium. He was pictured alongside wife Lauren Sanchez in the stands and the rest of the celebrities present were a bit of an eclectic mix, with Paris Hilton pictured in the VIP section and Pearl Jam singer Eddie Vedder showing up on the big screens during hydration breaks. Spain’s 1-0 win over Iberian rivals Portugal wasn’t one for the purists but their fans won’t care one jot. That applies to Spanish actor Javier Bardem as well who was in the stands cheering on his country at the Dallas Stadium in Arlington, wearing their home jersey too. Amazon founder and business tycoon Jeff Bezos was in attendance with wife Lauren Sanchez Paris Hilton posed in the VIP section of the stadium in Seattle before taking her seat  Javier Bardem, right, wore a Spain jersey as he cheered on his country vs Portugal on MondayVIRAL MOMENT OF THE DAYTuesday’s World Cup breakfast is Cristiano Ronaldo-centric and that applies to our viral moment of the day. During their last-32 2-1 win over Croatia last week in Toronto, superstar rapper Drake was in attendance. After Ronaldo scored the equaliser, Drake pulled the ‘Where She At’ emote in relation to his Burning Bridges song off his latest album Iceman. After that match the pair posed for a photo and ahead of Monday’s defeat versus Spain, Ronaldo performed the ‘Where She At’ emote as he made his way to the stadium.  PICTURE OF THE DAYFrom happiness to sadness for Ronaldo as he broke down in tears upon the full-time whistle on Monday. At 41 years old, this is his last World Cup and the emotion of another defeat and what that meant proved all too much at the full-time whistle.Ronaldo has won it all during his storied career bar the World Cup and the realisation of not adding the ultimate prize to his CV fully hit home as he applauded the travelling Portugal fans. Cristiano Ronaldo was crying at full-time after Portugal’s World Cup last-16 exit by SpainSTAT OF THE DAYThe fallout of Portugal’s World Cup exit and what it means for Ronaldo will rumble on and on and despite scoring during this tournament, the iconic No7 will have many critics. This stat will only add fuel to the fire: Ronaldo (17) recorded the most shots at a single edition of the World Cup without creating a single chance for a team-mate. That’s two more than former Mexico midfielder Alberto Garcia Aspe at the 1998 World Cup. Ronaldo had 17 shots for Portugal at this World Cup but didn’t create a chance for a team-mateTHREE THINGS TO LOOK OUT FOR TODAY1. Will the FA appeal Jarell Quansah’s red card? This has been a developing story overnight but will the FA actually appeal against the red card applied to Jarell Quansah? It comes in light of FIFA’s controversial U-turn over USA striker Folarin Balogun’s sending off against Bosnia-Herzegovina last week following President Donald Trump’s intervention. As a result, Balogun controversially started the USA’s defeat by Belgium.Quansah was given his marching orders on 54 minutes after a VAR review for a challenge on Mexico’s Jesus Gallardo. The defender is now set to serve a one-game ban, meaning he misses Saturday’s quarter-final with Norway, but the FA haven’t ruled out appealing against it, with internal discussions ongoing and all options open. The FA are considering whether or not to appeal against Jarell Quansah’s (right) red card2. Can Lionel Messi take the outright lead in the Golden Boot race?Argentina’s captain and icon Lionel Messi shares the race for the Golden Boot with France skipper Kylian Mbappe and Norway striker Erling Haaland. All three are on seven goals, but Messi can take the outright lead with a goal against Egypt.Earlier this tournament he became the World Cup’s all-time leading goalscorer and don’t be surprised if he extends that on Tuesday.  Argentina talisman Lionel Messi (centre) has scored seven goals so far at this World Cup3. Can Switzerland breach Colombia’s resolute defence?Colombia have not conceded a goal since a freak equaliser from Uzbekistan in their opening World Cup match. Since then, they have only allowed three shots on target in total across three games against Ghana, Portugal and DR Congo. In those three games in attack, Colombia have tested opposition goalkeepers 23 times. It’s going to be a tough task for Switzerland. Colombia keeper Camilo Vargas has been relatively untroubled during this World Cup so farTODAY’S GAMESArgentina vs Egypt (5pm, Atlanta, ITV 1)World Cup champions Argentina continue their quest for back-to-back titles in the first game on Tuesday against Egypt. Both teams survived major scares during their last 32 matches, with Argentina scraping past Cape Verde in extra-time; while Egypt needed penalties to prevail over Australia.Egypt can cause Argentina problems with Omar Marmoush and talisman Mohamed Salah in their ranks, but their opponents have the ultimate trump card with Messi. Prediction: Argentina win  Argentina are the favourites vs Egypt in their World Cup last-16 clash on Tuesday in AtlantaSwitzerland vs Colombia (9pm, Vancouver, ITV 1)The final last-16 tie sees Switzerland take on Colombia. The Swiss haven’t reached the quarter-finals of a World Cup since they hosted the tournament in 1954. If they are to end that hoodoo then they face a resolute Colombian defence (see above) who also have the goalscoring threat spearheaded by Luis Diaz.Don’t be surprised if it’s an all-South American affair in one quarter-final tie. Prediction: Colombia win NEW: How much is David Beckham set to pocket from his World Cup brand deals?
