As if things weren’t bad enough for Michael Carrick after Man United were beaten by Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday night, Lisandro Martinez plunged his beleaguered manager into further trouble with an astonishing post-match rant. In it, the Argentine defender hit out at United’s performance in Spain, insisted Carrick was ‘doing his best’, and accused the club’s hierarchy of not backing the team enough. ‘I expect more (investment) 100 per cent,’ Martinez said. ‘I expect more from our technical director. I have to control myself a lot but sometimes is a reflection of the mirror of how is our club at the moment.’We did a fantastic season last season and now we expect more from the top; more players to compete because many teams bring many players as well. We created the base to create an amazing team. It is annoying and disappointing coming here and I am not seeing my team trying to get an amazing result.’ It remains to be seen if there are any ramifications for Martinez, but it all adds to the sense of crisis surrounding Old Trafford right now.So, in light of Martinez’s comments, Daily Mail Sport has taken a look at previous examples of United stars calling out the club – and what happened to them. Lisandro Martinez called out Man United’s hierarchy after their defeat by Atletico Madrid The defeat in Spain heaped the pressure on under-fire Red Devils boss Michael CarrickJaap Stam – 2001Jaap Stam was a key part of United’s famous Treble-winning team in 1998-99, making his abrupt departure to Lazio in 2001 all the more shocking. That came after the Dutch defender released an autobiography in August of that year, with some of the claims in it reportedly upsetting Sir Alex Ferguson. Stam made statements about his views on opposition players and team-mates, while he alleged that Ferguson’s approach to buy him in 1998 had been done without the permission of his former team PSV. Ferguson was incensed and dropped Stam from his squad shortly before his departure, which at the time was put down to a generous offer from Lazio and a dip in form after an Achilles issue.Years later, Ferguson admitted it was a mistake but his views at the time were no doubt affected by the release of Stam’s autobiography. Jaap Stam (right) left United shortly after the release of his controversial autobiography Roy Keane – 2005 Roy Keane’s exit from United 21 years ago was hugely explosive and came after a period where tensions between him and Sir Alex Ferguson had been rising. Things came to a head following a 4-1 defeat by Middlesbrough at the start of November 2005, after which Keane appeared on MUTV and savagely ripped into his team-mates.This included his brutal description of Rio Ferdinand, then United’s record signing, when he said: ‘Just because you are paid £120,000-a-week and play well for 20 minutes against Tottenham, you think you are a superstar.’His comments were so inflammatory that Ferguson and United CEO David Gill ensured the interview was never broadcast. Those present had described the interview as ‘explosive even by Keane’s standards’.His departure was confirmed by mutual consent a few weeks later, yet despite the dramatic ending, Keane was given a testimonial by United and Ferguson spoke highly of him after his retirement was confirmed in June 2006. Roy Keane left United shortly after an inflammatory interview about his team-mates on MUTVWayne Rooney – 2010 Wayne Rooney may be United’s record goalscorer after 13 years of glorious service, yet things could have been so different following the saga around his future in 2010.Frustrated by the high-profile sales of Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez the previous summer, Rooney raised doubts over the club’s ambition in a statement after Ferguson revealed the forward wanted to leave. Rooney claimed that in meetings, Gill and the Red Devils boss ‘did not give me any assurances’ over the future of the squad and the ‘continued ability of the club to attract the top players in the world’, insisting this wasn’t about money.Amid links to Man City, some fans protested outside Rooney’s Cheshire mansion, with one banner reading: ‘If you join City you’re dead’.But, in a dramatic u-turn days later following intense talks, Rooney signed a new five-year contract after receiving the assurances he craved.Rooney later admitted his actions were wrong, and he went on to spend seven more years at Old Trafford before joining Everton in 2017. United legend Wayne Rooney almost left in 2010 after handing in a transfer requestCristiano Ronaldo – 2022 Cristiano Ronaldo’s triumphant return to United in the summer of 2021 quickly turned sour, with the legendary Portuguese star leaving the club just over a year later after his contract was terminated. Having grown frustrated with what he witnessed on and off the pitch, Ronaldo fell out with Erik ten Hag early on in the 2022-23 season. So furious was Ronaldo that he gave an unsanctioned interview to Piers Morgan in November 2022.Across the two-part chat, Ronaldo claimed he had ‘no respect’ for Ten Hag, insisted he felt ‘betrayed’ by the club and said that the Glazers ‘do not care’ about United. He also hit out at his critics, which included former team-mates Gary Neville and Wayne Rooney, and made several other damning allegations.Within a week of the interview airing, Ronaldo left the club by ‘mutual agreement’ without a pay-off, and he went on to join Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia. Cristiano Ronaldo left United in November 2022 after falling out with boss Erik ten HagJadon Sancho – 2023When Jadon Sancho joined United from Borussia Dortmund in 2021 for £73million, it was one of the most anticipated Premier League transfers in years. But things never got going for Sancho, and despite him eventually leaving on a free transfer this summer, his last Premier League appearance for United came on August 26, 2023, with a key moment coming a week later when they faced Arsenal.Sancho was left out of the matchday squad that day, and ten Hag said post-match this was due to poor performances in training. The winger immediately hit back on social media, saying the claims were ‘completely untrue’ and insisted he was being made a ‘scapegoat’ by the club. Jadon Sancho famously spoke out against Erik ten Hag but things didn’t work out well for him Sancho appeared to choose the wrong man to take on, as, after refusing to apologise, he was banished from the first-team by ten Hag. Sancho went on to join Dortmund on loan the following January, before successive season-long stints at Chelsea and Aston Villa. He did feature once more for United – in the 2024 Community Shield – but the fact he was also deemed surplus to requirements under ten Hag’s successor Ruben Amorim suggested that speaking out didn’t work well.
