Tyson Fury believes fellow British boxer Moses Itauma fought Filip Hrgovic too soon in a decision that could ‘cost him £100million’. Itauma, 21, fell short in his world heavyweight title bout against the Croat when he was stopped in the ninth round at The O2 on Saturday night. Britain’s talented young boxer was ahead on the cards and looked destined to claim the vacant IBF heavyweight title before Hrgovic, 34, mounted an impressive comeback to stage the shock victory.Fury, who is gearing up for an expected showdown with long-time British rival Anthony Joshua in November, believes Itauma’s first shot at a world title came ‘too early’ and it could ultimately deny him a huge payday.’I said it was too early – and it could cost him £100m,’ the former heavyweight champion told The Telegraph on Thursday, who famously defeated Wladimir Klitschko to win three world-title belts at the age of 27 in 2015.’If I had boxed him aged 21, Klitschko would have knocked me out,’ the Gypsy King recalled. ‘Moses is a brilliant talent. I’ve had him in camp and sparred him many times. Tyson Fury (above) believes fellow British boxer Moses Itauma fought Filip Hrgovic too soon Itauma, 21, lost his world title bout against the experienced Croat at The O2 on Saturday night’Moses is very talented but also very young and raw. Whatever Moses is at 21, in five years’ time, 10 years’ time, he’ll be 10 times better, 10 times stronger, more experienced. He’s an amazing boxer, talented.’Despite waxing lyrical about Itauma’s raw ability, Fury believes he wasn’t ready to face a ‘battle-hardened veteran’ such as Hrgovic, who has fought hundreds of fights at differing levels around the world. ‘As we saw for the first six, seven rounds, Moses outclassed him,’ the 38-year-old said. ‘But when it came to the stretch, the championship distance, the young man wasn’t ready to go down the straight with a veteran who trained hard, looked in fantastic shape, dedicated himself, and is in the prime of his life at 34.’I said to everybody who would listen, this is too soon. This guy needs another four, five fights. What’s the rush? He’s 21. Not only has it cost Moses the hundred-million-dollar career as a superstar athlete – like (NBA star) LeBron James and all those people – when you’ve been banjoed like that it’s difficult to turn that around mentally. ‘It’s not rocket science. If you go from not going past four rounds to jumping into a 12-round world-title fight without winning anything along the way… if you look at my career, I won English, Irish, British, Commonwealth, European, every international belt there was along the way and every world-title belt, too: Lineal, Ring Magazine, everything you can think of… I did it the traditional route.’Itauma, who went into the title fight unbeaten, won every round heading into the second half of the bout before momentum swung drastically in the Croat’s favour. Fury believes he wasn’t ready to face a ‘battle-hardened veteran’ such as 34-year-old HrgovicFellow British boxer Chris Eubank Jr posted on X after his defeat: ‘Not sure what happened tonight. Moses was fighting well & then gassed out it seems… at his young age this should simply not be happening. ‘Time to rethink his training camp moving forward I think. Congratulations to Filip Hrgovic becoming the new heavyweight champ.’
