Troy Aikman reveals he could walk away from broadcasting in stunning admission as NFL legend’s future with ESPN hangs by a thread

Not even Troy Aikman knows what’s on the cards for his own future.Aikman seems all but destined to leave ESPN when his contract expires at the end of the season following what has become a very public dust-up with the company and his on-air partner Joe Buck. The argument stemmed from Buck receiving a new multi-year contract extension from the company, which Aikman wasn’t informed of. In the industry, it’s common for broadcast partners to be signed in tandem – or, at least, kept in the loop on the deals of their co-commentators.Now, with the TV couple set for a bitter divorce, speculation has swirled over Aikman’s future in broadcasting. It seems that the Hall of Fame football player is torn as well.Speaking in Dallas at a book signing for Peter King’s ‘The Game,’ the former Cowboys quarterback told the Dallas Morning News’ Tim Cowlishaw that ‘there’s a 50-50 chance’ he may not be on television next year.Buck’s six-year, $108 million extension that he signed in September came as a shock to Aikman after they spent 25 seasons on the air together. Troy Aikman says there’s a ’50-50 chance’ he may leave broadcasting at the end of the season Aikman is embroiled in a public and bitter dispute with his on-air partner of 25 years, Joe Buck Aikman’s job insecurity comes at a time where most NFL broadcasters are tied in with talentThis boiled over into an argument between the pair in Los Angeles two weeks ago before a Buffalo Bills-Los Angeles Rams game on Monday Night Football.Aikman deemed Buck’s actions as the ‘ultimate act of betrayal,’ according to Puck, telling the play-by-play broadcast that he ‘f***ed me over.’Considering Aikman’s experience as a No. 1 color commentator at both Fox Sports and ESPN, it’s not likely he’ll be able to find a similar role elsewhere.Fox is well-set with Tom Brady as their No. 1 and have a reliable No. 2 broadcaster in Greg Olsen as well. For Sunday Night Football, NBC has Cris Collinsworth signed to a deal through the 2029-30 NFL season. As for the other two networks who broadcast NFL games regularly, Amazon Prime just signed Kirk Herbstreit to a three-year extension in September while CBS just made JJ Watt’s promotion to the No. 1 spot a full-time gig. This may leave Netflix as Aikman’s only option left, considering the streaming giant’s penchant for rotating color commentators for their holiday and international games. In Melbourne, Luke Kuechly served in the role alongside NBC’s Noah Eagle.Aikman could remain involved with the sport by working with his former team in Dallas, describing his relationship with team owner Jerry Jones as ‘complicated’ but ‘built, I believe, on respect.’ He told Mike Fischer: ‘I would welcome any conversation with Jerry, and quite honestly, I don’t know if there would be – or if there ever would be an opportunity. But if Jerry came to me and felt that, in his heart, I could lend some services that would help make them better, I would – I’d have a hard time not taking a good look at that.’
