Todd Boehly and Mark Walter are exploring a sale of their stakes in Chelsea to majority owners Clearlake Capital.Talks are ongoing over a deal that could value the club at £5billion – although whether an agreement can be struck remains to be seen.It is understood that discussions have been taking place on and off for the last two years amid differences in strategy between the two American groups who joined forces to buy the club in a forced sale from Roman Abramovich for £2.5bn with a further commitment of a £1.75bn investment in 2022.While Clearlake owns 61.5 per cent, it shares joint control with Boehly, who is close to the end of a five-year term as chairman. Next May, that role will switch to Clearlake. Boehly is a co-controlling owner, along with Behdad Eghbali and Jose E Feliciano, who manage the Clearlake investment, with all major decisions having to be signed off by the group.The remaining 38.5 per cent is split between Boehly, Walter and Swiss business leader Hansjorg Wyss.
