Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher’s competitive sides came out once more on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football as they made their annual Premier League predictions at the start of the season.The long-time adversaries now pundits and friends revealed their thoughts after their post-match analysis of Chelsea’s 3-2 win at Fulham.And as you would expect the pair didn’t see eye-to-eye – especially when it came to their own beloved clubs: Manchester United and Liverpool.However, the pair were in unison when it came to deciding who would be crowned Premier League champions this season – with both backing holders Arsenal to successfully defend their title.’One hundred per cent Arsenal,’ said Neville. ‘They’re way out in front and the squad they have assembled with the signings of [Ezri] Konsa, [Bruno] Guimaraes, [Christos] Tzolis and maybe one more – what a squad they have.’In the race for the top four, the duo both had Manchester City and Chelsea but differed with the final teams in their selections as Neville backed United and Carragher chose Liverpool. At the moment I’m not convinced by United or Liverpool but I’m going for United fourth as I’m purely a fan.’In fifth, Carragher went for United and you guessed it… Neville went for Liverpool.Tottenham come sixth in Carragher’s predictions, while Brentford who thumped the London rivals 3-0 on Saturday – but in truth it could and perhaps should have been more – are his European contender.Neville has Brighton finishing sixth – highlighting the continuity under Fabian Hurzeler and has Spurs as his European contender.All three promoted sides in Coventry City, Hull City and Ipswich Town are tipped to go straight back down by Neville; while Carragher believes Coventry will stay up.The side to go down in his estimation? Sunderland. Despite losing at Hull City, Neville predicts Manchester United will finish fourth this seasonThe Black Cats finished seventh last season to qualify for the Europa League and Carragher believes their European commitments this season will prove their downfall domestically.’They’re going to be doing a lot of Thursday-Sunday,’ he began his reasoning with. ‘I think Sunderland last season reminded me a little bit of Sheffield United under Chris Wilder when they came up and had a really brilliant and finished high up the table.’But a lot of the games, like Sunderland last season, were won by the odd goal. When you look at their underlying numbers last season they were pretty close to relegation and I think with the European football it could be a problem for them.’Both see Fulham at risk of relegation, while Carragher also adds Crystal Palace to that mix.In terms of individual accolades, the duo have Manchester City striker Erling Haaland as top goalscorer.As for impact signing, both chose players in north London with Tottenham’s Mateus Fernandes earmarked by Carragher and Arsenal’s Guimaraes highlighted by Neville.Speaking about the Gunners’ midfielder, Neville was effusive in his praise. Neville hailed Arsenal summer signing Bruno Guimaraes as the ‘best signing by a mile’ Carragher and Neville’s predictions were shown in full at the end of the Monday night show’I think it’s the best signing by a mile,’ Neville declared. ‘If you take an outfield player out of Arsenal’s team there wasn’t a massive drop off between the first and second team apart from Declan Rice. If Rice gets injured for three months that would be a risk to Arsenal but the signing of Guimaraes removes that.’He is a massive personality and believes he can win every single match for his team. He’s somebody you would want alongside you. For £75million that is value in this market.’For player to watch, Carragher opts for Jeremy Jacquet, while Morgan Rogers was Neville’s pick.Newcastle boss Matthias Jaissle was the manager to watch for Carragher, while Xabi Alonso got the nod for Neville.
