It’s been 20 years since the New Orleans Saints played their first Monday Night Football game in the Superdome after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. That game went down in Saints lore forever after Steve Gleason, who would later be diagnosed with ALS and became an advocate for researching the disease, would block a punt against the rival Atlanta Falcons en route to a victory. Two decades later, just days after the exact anniversary of that MNF contest, the Falcons and Saints met in the dome yet again. This time, the Falcons trounced New Orleans. The Falcons scored a franchise record-tying five rushing touchdowns en route to a 45-24 victory against their rivals. It was all thanks to two running backs named Robinson. While Bijan Robinson carried the ball the most and racked up 145 yards and two touchdowns, backup ball carrier Brian Robinson Jr put up three touchdowns on 65 yards.Atlanta’s rushing attack totaled nearly four times the ground yards (205) as New Orleans (50) did. Bijan Robinson (7) led the Atlanta Falcons in rushing yards to a 45-24 win over the Saints His backup, Brian Robinson, rushed for three touchdowns to compound the ground attack Saints quarterback Tyler Shough had a better passing game than counterpart Michael Penix JrThe Saints were better through the air than their counterparts as New Orleans’ quarterback, Tyler Shough, completed 30 passes for 286 yards and one touchdown.Atlanta’s Michael Penix Jr managed 15 completions for 223 yards and a touchdown in return. But it was Robinson and Robinson who truly led the offensive outputs of both teams with their otherworldly display on the night. Both of Bijan’s touchdowns came in the first quarter to blow the game wide open. His first scamper was for 59 yards before a four-yard red zone rush put the Saints in deep water. An Alvin Kamara second-quarter touchdown calmed things down before Brian Robinson found the end zone for the first time of the night. Falcons kicker Nick Folk knocked through a field goal to make it 24-7 before the half.Saints kicker Daniel Carlson’s field goal in the third quarter was followed by Brian’s second score of the evening to make it 31-10.In the fourth, Kamara would score again. But Penix would find receiver Jahan Dotson for a 31-yard pitch-and-catch before Brian would score a third time to give Atlanta a 45-17 advantage. Shough’s touchdown pass to Devaughn Vele would only serve as window dressing as the Saints fell on an emotional evening. Saints legend Steve Gleason (L) returned to the Dome over 20 years after his blocked kick on Monday Night Football – the first game played in the Superdome after Katrina (R: Drew Brees)Gleason – who has spent 15 years battling ALS – was back at the Superdome on Monday night and received a hero’s welcome. The 49-year-old was diagnosed with ALS back in 2011. He is now wheelchair bound, breathes through a ventilator, and communicates using his eyes and a special tablet. On Monday night, alongside his family, Gleason was reunited with Drew Brees and other members of that 2006 team as the Saints celebrated heroes of yesteryear. Above his eyes, tape was decorated with messages about ‘NOLA’ and the Saints. There is currently no cure for the disease – officially Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. But through his foundation, Team Gleason, he has reportedly raised more than $65 million over the past 15 years.
