Kylian Mbappe was a shock top-10 omission from Scotland’s Ballon d’Or vote as scrutiny continues to surround Harry Kane’s victory, including the launch of an investigation into suspicious bets. Kane and Mbappe were locked in a fierce race to be crowned the best player in the world and it was England captain Kane who just edged it at Monday’s glitzy ceremony in London.A full breakdown of how each nation’s journalist voted has since come to light and it can be revealed that Scotland’s voter did not put Real Madrid and France star Mbappe in his top 10.The Scottish journalist, who was one of three reporters to leave Mbappe off his top 10, joined by colleagues in Greece and Ukraine, had Kane as his winner, followed by Lamine Yamal and Rodri, both of whom won the World Cup.Fellow Spaniard Fabian Ruiz ranked fourth, with Erling Haaland, Dayot Upamecano, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Marc Cucurella, Ferran Torres and Lionel Messi completing his top 10. Only two countries left Kane off the top 10 – Mexico and Ivory Coast – while four nations overlooked Yamal – Belarus, Cameroon, Croatia and Greece. Amazingly, the Greek journalist left out Mbappe AND Yamal, including William Pacho (3rd), Joao Neves (5th), Michael Olise (6th), Gabriel (8th), Marquinhos (9th) and Declan Rice (10th) instead. Suspicious bets made around the Ballon d’Or has triggered an investigation from French policeFormer winner Rodri got 10 first place votes – Croatia, Czech Republic, Guatemala, Iceland, Nigeria, Serbia, the United States, South Korea, Thailand and Vietnam – while six countries put Messi on top.The bigger issue with the voting – as an overall event there were ample problems, as explained by Daily Mail Sport, who was in attendance on the night – was what has been described as suspicious betting. An investigation by French publication ‘Upside’, as detailed by the Guardian, has explained that bets that triggered £149,000 in winnings has triggered an inquest by organisers France Football. Police have been alerted and are looking in to allegations that 12 bets placed on Polymarket – an American cryptocurrency-based platform – were done so with, in the view of organisers, an alarming level of accuracy. The identified accounts correctly predicted and bet on the eventual top five, leading to internal concerns at France Football that the result had been leaked or compromised.Upside’s findings, which are understood to have since been passed on to police, discovered 12 accounts created in the month of October that made a series of very similar bets. Seven of the accounts only placed bets on the Ballon d’Or market. France Football go to great lengths to limit the number of people with knowledge of the results prior to announcements on the night. They made sure players and their entourages, including those of Yamal, Mbappe and Kane, were kept in the dark. But, Upside’s investigation has served up some alarming allegations that will now be further examined by French police.
