The Boston Red Sox suffered a 9-0 defeat to the New York Yankees in the first game of their American League Wild Card Series – and the damage was done by two Massachusetts natives. Cam Schlittler put in a dominant performance on the mound as the Red Sox were shut out by the rivals in the postseason for the second time in their long, storied history.Schlittler was born in Walpole, approximately 18 miles south of downtown Boston and grew up idolizing the Red Sox from the Fenway Park stands. He tossed 6.1 innings in Game 1 on Tuesday night, recording 10 strikeouts and just two hits as he repeated his scoreless performance against them to win last year’s Wild Card Series. With the bat, it was Rice, from Cohasset, around 20 miles from Boston, who did the damage, blasting two home runs including an eighth-inning grand slam as he drove in six runners at Yankee Stadium. And there could not have been a more painful duo to do the damage for Boston than two locals who have instead been nurtured in the Yankees farm system. Cam Schlittler shutout his boyhood team again in a dominant display in the MLB Playoffs Schlittler tossed 6.1 scoreless innings to lead the New York Yankees to a Game 1 winSchlittler has been open about the fact he grew up being ‘taught to just hate the Yankees’ but insisted he never cared once it came to his own career. And his record against the team he grew up rooting for is off the charts, with a 0.47 ERA across six starts with 49 strikeouts. ‘I mean, you grow up and you’re taught to just hate the Yankees,’ Schlittler told ESPN in June. ‘You don’t really have a reason why. It’s just like what you’re supposed to do.’I’m a big sports guy, but it wasn’t really the end of the world for me. When it came to [being drafted by the Yankees], I really didn’t care about being a Sox fan. I was thinking about my career and how we can make the most out of that. ‘I knew, at least on the development side, on the pitching side, the Yankees had a really good reputation. I think at the time, the Red Sox didn’t and they’ve been a lot better now.’I had a really good connection with the Yankees in college. I didn’t really talk to the Red Sox. Like I’ve said before, they don’t really draft out of New England. It’s not something they like to do. And the Yankees are definitely all over that.’Rice, on the other hand, bucked the trend in Boston and the surrounding area by rooting for the sworn enemy. There are pictures of him as a young kid wearing a Yankees jacket and hat alongside two Red Sox-supporting friends. Another picture of him in his Yankees gear as a kid was posted by the team’s official social media accounts shortly after his Game 1 heroics. Ben Rice, also a Boston local, drove in six runners after hitting two home runs for New York Rice hit a grand slam in the eighth inning that ended the game as a contest in a 9-0 winAfter the game, he said: ‘It’s so cool. This is what you dream about. Yankees-Red Sox. Playoff game. In New York. There’s nothing better. It’s so much fun.’After being part of the rivalry in last year’s playoffs, Rice said: ‘It’s unbelievable. So cool to be a part of the rivalry now. Just given where I’m from and where I grew up, just makes it all that much more special.’Schlittler was asked about the unique connection he and Rice share after Tuesday’s Game 1 and said: ‘I mean, we love it. Mid-round guys. Ben has excelled very well in this organization. ‘It’s great to be teammates with him, having that comfortability, being from home. And he’s been dominant all season.’
