Longtime PGA Tour caddie Cliff Ellis has lifted the lid on the circumstances that led to him dropping Alejandro Tosti’s bag and storming off the course in the middle of the Biltmore Championship Asheville earlier this month.Ellis was caddying for the notoriously feisty Argentine Tosti during the first round of the tournament in North Carolina when the bizarre circumstances unfolded, with footage later emerging of him dropping the bag on the fairway and walking off.Until now, the exact reason for the meltdown, apart from Tosti claiming ‘he couldn’t keep up with eight pars in a row’ – had not been revealed, but now Ellis is speaking out.Appearing on Tee Box Golf Radio, Ellis began: ‘I got no problem telling you that the whole week this week was just ludicrous. A lot of just off the wall and insane things were going on all week between him and I.’He went on to explain that Thursday morning got off to a ‘real hot start’ when the pair argued on the driving range over the placement of the bag, a moment Ellis described as ‘just insane.’It was mid-round that things really escalated, though, when the pair were walking onto the 18th green, their ninth hole of the day. You know, he’ll pop the umbrella open for the walk and get under it so he doesn’t get in the sun. ‘And then he kind of said something. He was like, “Well, be stupid to have it out here.” I was like, “Well, are you planning on carrying this bag?” It’s like, “What difference does it make to you?” And so I just tried to brush it off.’Tosti is then alleged to have made a ‘personal attack’ at Ellis, which he declined to share on the radio show.’So I’m like, “you’re gonna call me that over this?” I was like, “I’m gonna let you walk that back real quick, and we can go forward.” Well, he doubled down on it, so I said, “you know what? I am done with you, and I’m out of here.” I said, “I quit.” Ellis has now revealed the moment occurred after Tosti took issue with the umbrella in his bag’He says, “are you kidding me?” I said, “absolutely. No, I’m not kidding you.” Who wants to be put through this?’Tosti was then left to play the second half of his round alone, carrying his own bag to card a one-over-par 72. In recent years, the golf star has burned through caddies, and was previously reported to have cursed repeatedly at his then-caddie Ray Yoel during a Korn Ferry Tour event in 2023. Earlier this year at the Valspar Championship, meanwhile, he used his caddie for a more humorous endeavor, replacing his name on the back of the bagman’s bib with ‘NEED A WIFE’ – seemingly in an attempt to find love in the crowd.
