NFL legend Emmitt Smith jumps to defense of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce and slams ‘poor policy’ around NFL WAGs

NFL great Emmitt Smith has issued a robust defense of Taylor Swift after the pop superstar faced backlash from football fans while attending Travis Kelce’s games.Swift, 36, has become a consistent feature at the Chiefs’ Arrowhead Stadium since she started dating Kelce and – after tying the knot at a lavish New York wedding this summer – has continued to show her support during the early weeks of this season. However, while legions of ‘Swifties’ are regularly thrilled at sightings of the 14-time Grammy winner at her husband’s games, some NFL fans have been left irked by networks insisting on showing Swift on their broadcast whenever she’s in attendance.Amid the growing backlash from fans, former Dallas Cowboys star Emmitt Smith has jumped to the defense of Swift, insisting she is simply a supportive partner.Speaking to Variety, he said: ‘Why would it be a controversial matter? She’s there to support her husband and she doesn’t care about all this other stuff, but the networks do. The networks are exposing everything because of who she is. ‘She’s not looking for the damn camera! She’s trying to be Taylor Swift, wife to Travis Kelce, and is trying to enjoy life. She’s not going, ‘Put me on the camera! I’m here!’  Taylor Swift has previously faced backlash over her attendance at Travis Kelce’s games Former Dallas Cowboys star Emmitt Smith has jumped to the defense of Swift’Most stars aren’t even like that. The media needs something to talk about, this is fresh and new, and she’s a big star. Do I like it? No. Can I do anything about it? No. Can she do anything about it? No. ‘The only thing she can do is not show up at the games, and who wants to do that? She’s just trying to be herself. That’s what losing your anonymity truly means – people follow you.’Last month, Swift left social media divided after she was seen pointing at her wedding ring as she celebrated Kelce’s touchdown against the Indianapolis Colts.’That’s my husband!’ screamed the 36-year-old, who was at Arrowhead Stadium alongside her parents, Scott and Andrea Swift, and her mother-in-law Donna Kelce. Most fans were full of praise for the pop superstar after showing her support with a passionate celebration, however, some were left unimpressed by the viral moment.Meanwhile, later in his interview with Variety, Smith delved further into the trend of NFL teams attempting to thrust the spotlight onto their star player’s partners. Back in summer, a number of quarterbacks, including Justin Herbert, Joe Burrow and Jaxson Dart, were seen cozying up to their girlfriends while at training camp. Swift was in the stadium for the game between the Chiefs and the Indianapolis Colts Some fans believed there was a coordinated effort from NFL teams to showcase their star player’s cozying up to their partners during preseason training campsSmith, evidently, is not a fan of the social media movement.’It shouldn’t be a policy. It’s a poor policy. The reason why it’s a poor policy is: Girlfriends do change. Wives sometimes change, but they don’t change as often as girlfriends do. ‘And if you’re going to do it for three [people], you have to do it for everyone — not just a select few — and that’s where the hypocrisy of that scenario comes into play for me. Plus, that in and of itself has no place in the game at practice. ‘Ain’t no way in the world Jimmy Johnson would allow it! And at the end of the day, I don’t think players want it either, because this is their job! This isn’t the place to be flirty-flirty! You’re there to work. Get your social media content afterward.’
