Newcastle 2-2 Liverpool PLAYER RATINGS: Which Toon star was unplayable at times? And who delivered an anonymous performance at the start of a defining season?

Dominik Szoboszlai scored a last-gasp penalty to earn his Liverpool team a draw at St James’ Park in the first game of the Andoni Iraola era.A raucous, hostile stadium was rocking after Anthony Elanga and substitute Joe Willock scored for Newcastle either side of Cody Gakpo levelling. But Szoboszlai’s 99th-minute thunderous strike from 12 yards saw Liverpool head back to Merseyside with a point that is hard to argue they deserved.Alexander Isak was also back at his old workplace and was booed with his every touch. This is how Daily Mail Sport’s Lewis Steele rated both sides. Dominik Szoboszlai’s last-gasp penalty rescued Liverpool a point at St James’ ParkNewcastle (4-2-3-1)Lukas Hornicek – 7The Czech new boy signed from Braga started with a fine display which included a couple of strong stops to deny the likes of Wirtz and pantomime villain Isak.Amar Dedic – 7Another signing from Portugal, Austrian Dedic had a tough afternoon up against Gakpo and Kerkez on that side but stood tall.Malick Thiaw – 7 The task was simple: keep Isak quiet. The Newcastle old boy barely had a sniff and all defenders could hold their heads high.Sven Botman – 7Made a last-ditch block to deny Munoz late on and, like defensive partner Thiaw, answered every question thrown his way.Lewis Hall – 6Was on for an eight out of 10 until the final seconds, when he gave away a stupid spot-kick. Did not need to foul Munoz and let his side down with a game-defining error. Lewis Hall had a brilliant game – until he brought down Victor Munoz late on to gift Liverpool their penaltySean Steur – 6.5Only 18, Steur is another who can be proud of his debut – though he was a bit slow at closing down Gakpo for Liverpool’s equaliser. The home side won the midfield battle.Lewis Miley – 7Newcastle fans were right to be worried about their midfield after losing Guimaraes and Tonali, plus an injury to Joelinton. But local lad Miley was excellent here.Anthony Elanga – 7.5Excellent run and finish for the first goal, with lightning quick pace the main weapon that undid Liverpool. Still had a lot to do but the shot was composed.Yoane Wissa – 8.5Like Isak, the man he replaced, Wissa had a first year to forget at his new club. But this was his best performance in a Newcastle shirt. Playing as a No 10, he was unplayable at times. Yoane Wissa impressed after a difficult first season for NewcastleHarvey Barnes – 7 Did a lot of dirty work off the ball that may go unnoticed. Asked questions of Frimpong throughout. Will Osula – 7.5A stellar assist for the opening goal and an accomplished performance overall. On a day when all eyes were on £125million Isak, Osula was the best No 9 on the pitch.Substitutes:Jacob Ramsey (for Steur, 56) – 7.5Joe Willock (for Osula, 56) – 7.5Jacob Murphy (for Elanga, 76)Aladji Bamba (for Miley, 76)Fabian Schar (for Wissa, 90+5)Manager: Matthias Jaissle – 7.5Got his tactics and substitutions spot on and what a way to introduce himself to the Premier League – nearly. Let down by Hall, who gave away a sloppy penalty. New Toon boss Matthias Jaissle got his tactics spot on and was minutes away from a dream start to life in the Premier LeagueLiverpool (4-2-3-1)Alisson – 7Might be nit-picking but his positioning for Newcastle’s first goal was questionable. Could do little about the second and made some strong saves to keep his side alive..Jeremie Frimpong – 5Offered little going forward and was one of many players bypassed too easily for Willock’s goal in the second half.Jeremy Jacquet – 6Crisp passing on his Liverpool debut and made some OK tackles but maybe the experience of substitute Araujo would have been better at a hostile stadium like this.Virgil van Dijk – 5Slow at times and Liverpool struggled with passes in behind the back line. Virgil van Dijk looked off the pace and struggled to deal with Newcastle’s balls in behindMilos Kerkez – 6Outpaced for Newcastle’s opener. Was berated by team-mate Isak on 73 minutes when the Hungarian got a cross terribly wrong.Dominik Szoboszlai – 7A thunderous penalty to level it in the last second. Bailed out his team-mates who were poor overall. Where have we seen that before?Ryan Gravenberch – 5Whether by design or not, his forward runs left Liverpool exposed to the counter-attacks that led to Newcastle’s goals.Rio Ngumoha – 6Ten times better on the left flank. Played on the right here and was largely ineffective. Signing at least one new winger this week simply must happen.Florian Wirtz – 4Came close in the first half when Hornicek tipped his left-footed shot wide but otherwise this was an anonymous performance to start a defining season for Wirtz.Cody Gakpo – 7Stunning strike to equalise. Should have scored a second minutes later but took one touch too many. Has been heavily linked with Spurs but Gakpo was the best of Liverpool’s attackers here. Cody Gakpo – linked with Tottenham all summer – drew Liverpool level with a stunning strikeAlexander Isak – 4Got into some good areas and was let down by poor final balls from team-mates – but a day to forget for Isak on his return to Newcastle.Substitutes:Alexis Mac Allister (for Wirtz, 63) – 6Victor Munoz (for Ngumoha, 63) – 6Ronald Araujo (for Jacquet, 70) – 6Lewis Koumas (for Gravenberch, 78)Manager: Andoni Iraola – 6Whether Liverpool had lost, drawn or even gone on to win, Iraola needs new signings this week if he is to realise his ambitions this year.Referee: Stuart Attwell – 6A bit trigger-happy with his cards early on but got the big decisions right.
