Michael Carrick says he has blocked out noise surrounding Man United with ‘headphones’ but believes their draw at Leeds is a ‘fresh start’ and has ‘no doubts’ his side can overturn poor run

Michael Carrick said he needed ‘headphones’ to shut out the noise around Manchester United after a difficult week ended with his team taking a point against Leeds at Elland Road.Carrick claimed that the 1-1 draw felt like a fresh start for United, but admitted that a run of two wins from 10 games doesn’t look good. The build-up to the match had been dominated by Lisandro Martinez’s post-match outburst against club bosses in Madrid in midweek, and the Argentina defender only lasted 45 minutes before coming off with a thigh problem.‘It’s been quiet inside the club but the headphones have been on this week,’ said Carrick.‘I spoke to the boys this morning about what the game is, the history and what it means to the supporters, to the football club, to us coming over here into their territory and what it takes to win here and get a result.‘It definitely tests you if you come here and you’re not quite there. I take a lot from the way we went about it. Michael Carrick believes that Man United’s 1-1 draw with Leeds is a fresh start for his side‘We’re not getting too carried away because we haven’t won the game. But it I felt like a bit of a fresh start, to be honest, in terms of where we’re at, and accepting it and doing something about it.’However, United are still in 13th place in the table with just one Premier League win against newly-promoted Ipswich back in August.‘I understand the situation doesn’t look too good if you look at it from a certain way, but I got no doubts that we can go on a good run,’ added Carrick.‘Listen, we’re not accepting it as everything’s great by any stretch, so I’m realistic about that. But sometimes you do struggle.‘There has been a cycle at times here over a period of time when it can go in different directions. We have got to be stable enough to keep doing the right things as a group.’Bryan Mbeumo put United ahead in the first half, but Dominic Calvert-Lewin equalised from a corner shortly after half-time as Leeds’ encouraging start to the season continued.United defender Harry Maguire said: ‘To concede a set-piece after half-time is disappointing. When you come to places like this, you can’t be beaten on set plays and we conceded a set play which got them back in the game.‘We can be better. We have to show more quality with the ball. But you can’t question the togetherness, the spirit, the fight. This is a tough place to come. Leeds have been flying in the league. Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s second half equaliser means United only have one win from their seven Premier League matches ‘We got a foothold at about 70 minutes and probably looked the more likely to go and win it, but a draw is probably fair.’After scoring his fifth goal of the season, Calvert-Lewin said: ‘I just tried to cause a ruckus. I just make it difficult for the defender. I read the flight of the ball and was quickest to react.‘They are still a very good team with a lot of quality, regardless of the outside noise.’Leeds boss Daniel Farke was disappointed his team couldn’t take all three points as they produced a good response to their first league defeat of the season at Arsenal.‘We took it as a compliment that we have done many things right over the last month if we were seen as favourites against Manchester United,’ said Farke. ‘We have earned this and we wanted to prove the comments right.‘I felt it was not necessary to be losing at half-time, but it is still Manchester United. In the second half, we got the equaliser and we should have kept up the dominance. We should have won the game, but we move on.’
