Michael Carrick doesn’t feel like he is on his last legs as Manchester United head coach – but admits people might think he is ‘crazy’ for looking forward to the Champions League clash with Roma at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.Speaking ahead of the game at Carrington on Monday, Carrick also insisted that he has no concerns over Lisandro Martinez’s commitment despite the Argentine’s reckless red card at Chelsea on Saturday.United go into the game against Roma in danger of equalling a club record of ten consecutive games without a win in a single season set by Dave Sexton’s team in March 1978.Last week, United bosses gave Carrick more time to turn the season, but there is a growing suspicion that he could be sacked in the international break after the next two games against Roma and Aston Villa.Asked if he has the same feeling, Carrick said: ‘No, not at all. Listen. I can’t look into the future, and you never know what’s going to happen. I don’t know what’s going to happen.‘That doesn’t change the way I feel. That doesn’t change how we’re preparing for the game tomorrow, and I’m actually really looking forward to the game. I can’t wait for the game tomorrow. Michael Carrick does not feel like he is on the brink of the sack at Manchester United ‘You might think I’m crazy with the results we’ve had and what’s going on, but I genuinely, really can’t wait for the game tomorrow, and that’s all I’m focused on, really I am.‘Whatever happens, it is going to happen, but we want to make it a big night tomorrow night first.‘It’s what I am, it’s what I live for, you know. A lot of people could do my job when you’re winning a lot of football games. It’s about finding the solutions, finding the answers, staying strong, leading right and getting the best out of the players.‘We’ve got to keep pushing for that. But it doesn’t change my mindset at all. I love being here, I love working with the players, and the struggles and the challenges, that just drives you on to want it even more.’Martinez is available to face Roma but will be banned for the Villa game on Sunday after he was sent off for two bookings in the space of 82 seconds at Stamford Bridge – earning the second yellow card for striking Wesley Fofana in the face.It followed the Argentine’s outburst against club bosses, and director of football Jason Wilcox in particular, after United were beaten by Atletico Madrid last month. However, Carrick insisted there are no concerns over Martinez’s commitment or the general discipline in the dressing-room after Bruno Fernandes criticised his tactics in the defeat to Como a fortnight ago.‘No, I’ve got no concerns about commitment at all,’ said Carrick. ‘Things happen in football. Sometimes you do things, sometimes you make a decision, sometimes you make mistakes, sometimes it goes well for you. But the commitment is not an issue for sure.‘The dressing room is a good, good place, so perceptions are a funny thing. They can make things look all sorts of different ways and think about all sorts of different things. I’ve said it before, the commitment of the players to the club, to me, to each other, I don’t question that at all. We need to play better, we can make better decisions, but commitment’s not a thing at all.’ He says he is excited for Tuesday’s Champions League clash against Roma – despite the potential for another embarrassment Martinez and Fernandes are out of contract in June, although United have an option to extend both by 12 months. They are in talks with Fernandes but Martinez faces a more uncertain future at Old Trafford.‘You know how discussions go and when anything’s finalised, we’ll let you know. But at this stage, there’s nothing any further to update really,’ said Carrick.Patrick Dorgu returned to training at Carrington on Monday after six weeks out of action but the Dane won’t be involved against Roma. Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford missed the session and will remain on the sidelines with Benjamin Sesko and Manuel Ugarte.United badly need a win after picking up three points from their first three games against Sabah, Atletico Madrid and Como. They sit 20th in the league phase. After Roma, they face Sporting Lisbon, RB Leipzig, Bayern Munich and Villarreal.‘Of course we’re looking for the win,’ said Carrick. ‘There is the bigger picture and it’s about getting through to the later stages. One or two games you can get away with really, as long as you make amends for that. Tomorrow and the games coming up are going to dictate that for us. So we’re certainly still in it with a great chance of progressing, and it’s got to be the focus for now.’Roma’s only defeat in all competitions this season came in a dramatic 4-3 collapse to Real Madrid in the Champions League. But they have lost on all four of their visits to Old Trafford including a 7-1 defeat in 2007 – when Carrick scored twice – and 6-2 in 2021.‘Long time ago, eh?’ smiled Carrick. ‘It was a magical night, I have to say. It was one of the best nights, one of the best games, one of the best atmospheres I’ve been fortunate enough to witness.‘So the fact that I scored a couple and that was very unusual gives me great, great memories. But it was more the whole emotion of the night really. I have to say that it was a special one.’
