But the 2026 World Cup finalist has not fully lived up to his billing under new manager Xabi Alonso.Martinez replaced Robert Sanchez immediately in goal but has struggled to become a fan favourite so far this season. So, how did Martinez make the cut for this team?In his first game against Brighton, Martinez made four saves in the 4-3 win at home; the visitors had six shots on goal with four big chances. Jacquet has won 76 per cent of his duels this season.CB: Jan Paul van Hecke (Tottenham) – 7.62/10For the first time since the 2008-09 season, Tottenham are bottom of the Premier League after five games. At a time when Spurs are struggling badly under Roberto De Zerbi following heavy summer spending, a consistent presence in central defence is a genuine boost.Jan Paul van Hecke has played every minute of Tottenham’s forgettable Premier League campaign so far this season.Playing all 450 minutes matters early in a season when many new signings are still rotating. With a consolation goal to his name in the 3-2 defeat against Aston Villa, the Dutch centre-back has two clean sheets despite Spurs’ winless run. CB: Lewis Dunk (Brighton) – 7.70/10 Fresh from smashing a showstopper against Frank Lampard’s Coventry, Brighton defender Lewis Dunk has played 360 minutes for Fabian Hurzeler’s men.His second Premier League goal from outside the box was also his first since his clever free-kick against Liverpool in 2019.Averaging four clearances per game, Dunk has enjoyed two clean sheets in four starts.Nursing a knee injury, Dunk was replaced by Olivier Boscagli for Brighton’s crucial league clash with Arsenal.Despite missing the services of the 34-year-old, Hurzeler’s men stunned holders Arsenal 3-0 to secure third place in the table.CDM: Granit Xhaka (Sunderland) – 7.66/10Losing his place in the Switzerland squad over a fake vaccine certificate, Granit Xhaka is the only central defensive midfielder named in the team of the season after five rounds.Xhaka has created five big chances for Sunderland and the 33-year-old is averaging 1.2 interceptions and 1.8 tackles per game across the first five matches.The Sunderland captain has also impressed with his ball recoveries (6.6 per game) this season.With a 67 per cent dribble success rate, he has won 60 per cent of his duels across 450 minutes for Regis Le Bris’s men.Xhaka’s sublime delivery paved the way for hat-trick hero Brian Brobbey to complete a historic treble against Manchester City, although the Sunderland midfielder is still waiting for his first assist of the new season. Granit Xhaka has impressed both defensively and as an a creative force for Sunderland CAM: Martin Odegaard (Arsenal) – 7.60/10Leading the Gunners from the front, Martin Odegaard delivered when it mattered the most – the London derby.The Arsenal captain earned a 9.2 rating after he netted the winner against Chelsea. He also made four key passes and created two big chances against Alonso’s men.Odegaard enjoys 1.4 shots per game and has a goal conversion of 29 per cent after five matches. Arsenal’s captain has found the net with either foot for his side. With a passing accuracy of 91 per cent, the 27-year-old is also drawing 1.2 fouls per game.A calm and smooth operator on the field, Odegaard averages 2.4 balls recovered per game.He has made the team of the week twice and has looked back to his best so far this season. CAM: Morgan Rogers (Chelsea) – 7.68/10Before Odegaard flourished, Morgan Rogers announced his arrival in the London derby with a volley to beat Arsenal’s Raya.The £117million signing registered an assist in Chelsea’s high-scoring Stamford Bridge draw with Brighton and found the net against Hull City, only for the Blues to then turn in a toothless performance at Brentford.With three goals and one assist under his belt, Rogers averages 88 minutes per game for the Blues so far this season.He is expected to draw at least one foul from the opposition and his passing accuracy ranges from 75 to 80 per cent. The former Villa star is also defensively strong averaging 4.6 balls recovered per game. RW: Bukayo Saka (Arsenal) – 7.56/10Besides being a constant threat on the right wing and threading defence-splitting passes, Bukayo Saka has been pivotal for Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal so far this season, and like Odegaard is in fine form.It only took 23 minutes for Saka to open his Premier League account in Arsenal’s 3-0 win over Coventry City on matchday one at the Emirates Stadium last month.When the Gunners travelled to Birmingham to face Unai Emery’s Aston Villa, Saka scored the only goal of the match to give the defending champions all three points.The England international then converted his penalty late in the 97th minute against Sunderland to further enhance his goal tally. He has an XG of 3.21 goals.LW: Marcus Tavernier (Bournemouth) – 7.62/10Marcus Tavernier slotted home Bournemouth’s only goal in their 2-1 loss at Manchester City on matchday one, before the Cherries shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw with Everton.With his side developing a trend of conceding late goals, the 27-year-old opened the scoring again at Newcastle – only to witness a Jacob Ramsey equaliser in the 88th minute.The scoreline remained identical against Brentford for the hosts when Tavernier scored in the 52nd minute, before the visitors found the equaliser four minutes later.Tavernier has three goals to his name, has featured in team of the week twice and averages 1.6 shots on target per game. Joao Pedro has flipped the script at Stamford Bridge.Scoring in the first minute, Pedro assisted Cole Palmer, who decided Chelsea’s five-goal thriller against Fulham at Craven Cottage. A goal and an assist – the same story followed against Brighton.Following a quiet outing against Arsenal where he only managed a solitary shot on goal, the 24-year-old returned with his ‘assist, goal and repeat’ drill against Hull City.Three goals and three assists. A strong start. Chelsea lost 3-0 at Brentford last week with the Brazilian forward out injured.ST: Erling Haaland (Manchester City) – 7.60/10No surprise here. With Haaland leading the Premier League goalscoring charts, Maresca’s City have opened the season with five straight league wins for the first time since 2017.Haaland added Sunderland to the 25-team strong list of different clubs against which the Manchester City forward has found the back of the net in the Premier League.The Man City striker needed three meetings to score his first goal against Sunderland, after failing to do so in both outings last season.After ending his goalless run against Sunderland, Haaland is now averaging one goal per game in the English top flight.Averaging two shots on goal per game, the 26-year-old has an XG of 4.43 goals.Haaland has taken his goal tally to 117 in 137 league appearances.
