Milos Kerkez is at the heart of a political storm after being included in a list of ‘enemies of Ukraine’ alongside his father. It comes following an incident involving the Hungary defender and Ukraine during their first Nations League encounter in this current international break.Ukraine won 1-0 in Budapest on September 25 in a match that did have some feisty encounters. One moment saw Kerkez’s Hungary, and Liverpool, team-mate Dominik Szoboszlai involved in a scuffle with Ukraine’s Victor Tsygankov. As those two made their feelings known, Kerkez ran over and promptly grabbed Tsygankov by the collar. In defence of his son, Kerkez’s father Sebastijan – who is of Serbian descent – is reported to have uploaded a picture of the incident to his Instagram story with the song Russian Paradise by rapper AK-47 accompanying it. Some have interpreted that to be a reference to ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Hungary defender Milos Kerkez (centre left) is in a list of ‘enemies of Ukraine’ after this incident with Victor Tsygankov (right) during a UEFA Nations League encounter last month Kerkez rabbed Tsygankov by the collar after the latter confronted Dominik SzoboszlaiAs a result, both Kerkezes are believed to be included on Myrotvorets, a database of ‘enemies of Ukraine’ which includes pictures and details on the individuals included. It must be noted though that the list, which also includes Hungarian MP Balazs Hidveghi, is not run by or affiliated with the Ukrainian government. The incident though has turned the sporting matter into a political one, with the Hungarian deputy prime minister and minister of foreign affairs Anita Orban stepping in and condemning ‘possible threats’ aimed at the left back. She wrote on social media: ‘I strongly condemn the stigmatisation, any form of blacklisting, and any potential threats directed at Hungarian citizens Milos Kerkez and Balazs Hidveghi.’Throughout the weekend, alongside the government meeting, I was in constant consultation with Ukrainian government representatives, the Hungarian Football Federation (MLSZ), the embassy, ??and my colleagues to ensure that all parties involved took action within their respective spheres to resolve the situation.’Sport should be about performance, community, and respect. I thank the two national associations for their cooperation.’Kerkez missed the reverse fixture on Monday night, which Hungary won 2-1, due to suspension, but downplayed any ill-feeling to his opponents after September’s scuffle.’Personally, I have never supported and I do not support any aggression in my life,’ he told Hungarian outlet Telex. ‘I am not a person who considers anything that harms others acceptable.’At the same time, there is always tension in a football match, and in the match against Ukraine, all I did was defend our captain, my friend, and I would have done this even if any other country had been our opponent.’
