Liverpool are yet to receive any official approaches for attacking duo Harvey Elliott or Federico Chiesa – but Confidential understands the club are willing to listen to offers for the duo this week. All attention is on which forwards will join the club, but Anfield transfer chiefs also have the futures of several current high-profile stars on their to-do list. And neither Chiesa nor Elliott were part of the squad for the Premier League opener at Newcastle. With multiple clubs in England and on the continent scrambling to get players – and replacing ones that leave – there is expected to be activity and Liverpool have not ruled out clubs getting in touch regarding the pair. Sources in Italy have ruled out a number of top clubs in the hunt for Chiesa, a Euros winner. Atalanta, Como and Inter have previously shown interest, though. As for Elliott, the midfielder had a horrible year. Player of the Tournament at the Under-21s Euros this time last year, he moved to Aston Villa in a loan deal with a £35million obligation to buy – which would become active when he played 10 or more games. The 23-year-old did not reach that figure and returned to Liverpool. Both Chiesa and Elliott had a chance to shine in pre-season but failed to take it, for one reason or another – Elliott is clearly not match-fit, for example, and Chiesa has struggled with illness. And then young Lewis Koumas and James McConnell got the nod ahead of them on the substitutes’ bench for the trip to Newcastle. Head coach Andoni Iraola has taken a shine to Koumas and McConnell in pre-season and, as it stands, they will stay at the club this term – though that could change based on incomings with both attracting loan interest. Liverpool are struggling to generate interest in fringe players such as Federico Chiesa (left) and Harvey Elliott (right)SO WHO IS GOING OUT ON LOAN? The aforementioned Elliott and Chiesa could, of course, fall into this category. If Liverpool cannot get fees for them, they may well have to accept a loan. Koumas and McConnell, likewise, are both in the ‘to be confirmed’ folder after strong pre-season performances. Luke Chambers, the defender who can play left back or centre back, is in the same camp. Chambers, 22, who spent the second half of last season at Charlton, impressed in pre-season. It is understood there is interest in his signature but he will not leave for the sake of it. Given he can fill in across the back four, Iraola could also opt to keep him around. Youngsters Kaide Gordon, Keyrol Figueroa and Wellity Lucky may leave for the season, too, after Calvin Ramsay joined St Mirren this week. Kieran Morrison made a mad dash to Yorkshire last week. After travelling to Sheffield on match-day and signing for Wednesday on loan, he made his debut for the Owls that very evening and came off the bench after 68 minutes. He then managed 81 minutes from the start in a 2-0 defeat to Wolves in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night. Luke Chambers, the defender who can play left back or centre back, impressed in pre-season for Liverpool and may keep him around the first team rather than loan him outWHAT ABOUT BEZOS’ BILLIONS? Liverpool fans’ group Spirit of Shankly were due to meet the independent regulator of English football on Wednesday afternoon, it is understood, with a view to discussing billionaire Jeff Bezos’ stake in the club. The new statutory body was set up last year to protect the heritage of our game and also to ensure financial sustainability. Given the recent minority investment of around 38 per cent by Amit Bhatia and a consortium involving the world’s third-richest man Bezos, fans are worried about what it might mean for the future of the club and ticket prices. SOS were to hold a video call with representatives from the regulator and want to know what the investment – which has potential to lead to a full takeover – means for the club, who will run it and how. The fans’ group were also frustrated when they found out the stake was closer to 40 per cent than the original reported figure. Bhatia is the vice-chairman and is set to be at Anfield on Saturday as Liverpool face Nottingham Forest. KOP KIDS UPDATE One of the biggest positives for the academy this season is that talented teenager Joshua Abe is still at the club. This time last year, as has been well documented in this column, 16-year-old Abe had half of Europe chasing him with clubs such as Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea and Real Madrid believed to have made a pitch to sign the forward. Abe went on the first-team pre-season tour and had some exciting moments in the win over Sunderland in Nashville – but has rarely been seen since America, with the seniors or academy. The reason for that, it is understood, is that Abe is injured and is currently wearing his arm in a sling. Jayden Danns returned to Under-21 action last Friday after an injury nightmare of his own in an eventful game against Everton at Goodison Park that saw Mor Talla Ndiaye have to end the match as a goalkeeper! Liverpool star Joshua Abe, it is understood, has an arm injury that has kept him out of action Jayden Danns has had a torrid time with injuries after bursting onto the scene in cup cameos three years ago – he has three senior goals in ten appearances for the RedsGALAXY STAR COULD BE INCOMING The pursuit of a first-team winger goes on but it’s a fluid situation that changes every two minutes. At the time of writing, Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh has been nudged down the list given the south-coast club’s refusal to budge on their asking price of £70m. A Gambian could be signing for Liverpool, though. Apparently young midfielder Musa Jatta Bajaha has had a trial at the AXA Training Centre. He plays for Gambian team BST Galaxy. It would be a similar recruitment, if it went through, to the one for young defender Ndiaye. He was previously at Senegalese club Amitie FC having been spotted at an African youth tournament. Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh has been nudged down Liverpool’s list given the south-coast club’s refusal to budge on their asking priceSTAT OF THE WEEK There are a lot of damning stats to come out of the draw at Newcastle, such as the fact that Liverpool have conceded from more Opta-defined fast breaks than any side since the start of last season (nine). You could also have the numbers about clean sheets, or the lack thereof: in their last 18 games, they have managed just two shut-outs, one against Galatasaray in the Champions League last-16 and another against Fulham in the league. But the most notable might be that the Reds ranked 19th for distance covered on the opening weekend, running 107.2km (according to Opta). Fulham were top with 121.1km, which proves running is not everything, though big winners Chelsea (120.1km) Arsenal (119.8km) and Hull City (118.5) were just behind. Given Iraola demands intensity and a physical unit, he will want to improve those numbers. FROM BAD TO WIRTZ Data shows that Florian Wirtz was the most criticised player of the opening Premier League weekend online. British Gambler used a social listening tool known as Meltwater to study all X posts mentioning top-flight players this week. Wirtz had a 43.9 per cent hit rate of negative posts, just ahead of Alexander Isak with 41.1 per cent. Arsenal’s Christos Tzolis was top with the most positive posts. Does this mean anything? No – but it is fair to say Wirtz and Isak have work to do on Saturday as the negative noise around them is rather loud after just one matchday. Data shows that Florian Wirtz was the most criticised player of the opening Premier League weekend onlineWILL MUNOZ GET THE NOD? It’s a busy week ahead with not one, not two but three cup draws! Sort of. First up, this evening, we have what the EFL are calling a ‘pre draw’ to the Carabao Cup next round. Liverpool and other teams qualified for European football will be in that to decide whether they are home and away. That’ll be at around 7.20pm. Then, at approximately 10.15pm or after the Preston-Everton fixture, the ‘main draw’ will happen. Still with us? On Thursday, the Reds will learn their Champions League opponents. Hopefully some fun trips ahead! Iraola is also set to do his press conference on Thursday afternoon. He will be quizzed on Saturday’s game against Nottingham Forest who have won at Anfield in the last two years. Any changes to the XI? Personally, I’d bring in Victor Munoz for Rio Ngumoha and do something to sort out that stinking midfield, but what do I know…
