Lisandro Martinez on Thursday night apologised for his withering takedown of Manchester United’s hierarchy after ‘positive’ clear-the-air talks with director of football Jason Wilcox and other key figures.A fuming Martinez publicly criticised Wilcox and United’s top executives after defeat to Atletico Madrid for not backing manager Michael Carrick in the summer transfer window and for not fronting up to criticism after a miserable start to the campaign.Martinez looked to clarify his remarks with a statement on Instagram on Wednesday – the squad’s allocated day off following the 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid – before releasing a fresh statement after talks with Wilcox and the board. He is also understood to have accepted a fine. ‘It was a very positive conversation, where we were able to exchange views and speak openly about what happened after the game,’ Martinez said.‘Everyone knows that I am a passionate person and that I live football with great intensity.‘The frustration of the defeat led me to express how I felt at a time and place that perhaps were not the right ones, and for that I want to apologise.’ Lisandro Martinez has released another statement after meeting with Man United chiefsWhile Martinez has for the first time apologised for the timing of his remarks, made just moments after the match concluded in Spain on Tuesday, it is not clear whether he apologised privately for the nature of his blistering critique, particularly of Wilcox.Club sources stressed that Martinez alone made the decision to apologise publicly for his comments. The matter, in the eyes of United’s hierarchy, is seen as closed.‘Our club is at its best when we are all united, and I recognise that my words in that moment did not help with that,’ he added in his latest statement.‘I know that every single person at Manchester United is doing everything possible to achieve our shared ambition: bringing the success that this club and its supporters deserve.‘With this situation now behind us, we are fully focused on winning together.’Carrick, who was also present in Thursday’s crunch meeting at Carrington, is going to need Martinez on Sunday when United travel to Elland Road to face Leeds United, not least with Noussair Mazraoui, Patrick Dorgu and Luke Shaw all already sidelined at the back.Martinez’s long-term future is more uncertain, however. He is out of contract at the end of June, although United can extend it by another year.If there is no resolution in the coming weeks, Martinez is free to negotiate with clubs outside of England for a pre-contract agreement.United are unlikely to let a 28-year-old World Cup winner leave as a free agent five years after his £57million move from Ajax, but could trigger the extension so they can demand a transfer fee for him.
