Lewis Moody said he would ‘absolutely love it’ if his two sons followed him into professional sport after eldest Dylan joined Arsenal ace Max Dowman in an England junior football squad.Moody was a 2003 Rugby World Cup winner with England, earning 71 caps for his country. He also represented the British & Irish Lions and lifted 10 major trophies with Leicester Tigers.Last year, the ex-flanker’s world was turned upside down when he became the latest former rugby star to receive a motor neurone disease (MND) diagnosis. MND affects the body’s nervous system. There is currently no cure. Moody is not the only one with sporting talent in his family. Dylan, 18, is a goalkeeper for Championship side Southampton and alongside Dowman, is a current member of England’s Under-19 squad. Moody’s youngest son Ethan, 16, is a promising rugby player who is in Bath’s age grade set-up.‘I’d absolutely love it,’ Moody said, when asked if he’d welcome Dylan representing England at senior level in football. ‘He’s got his professional contract and he’s doing really well with England.‘He’s got a lot of work to do until he gets to that stage, but he’s got a great attitude and if he sticks at it and he really wants it, I’m sure he’ll get where he wants. I remember talking to Dylan and I asked him what he wanted to do. He said: “I want to play for England.” I had that classic adult response and went: “Is that a bit lofty?” But I apologised because it’s not my place to diminish his excitement. If that’s his goal, I’m going to be there to support if he needs advice. I love the fact the kids are passionate about something they enjoy. Ethan is in the throes of the academy set-up with Bath. Moody has taken part in a drug trial – funded by the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, which was set-up by former Scotland and Lions star Doddie Weir who passed away due to MND in 2022. ‘I’m at peace with my diagnosis,’ Moody said. ‘I was at peace almost immediately.‘There’s nothing I can do to change my circumstances, other than to use my energy to raise awareness so that the people who are fighting this disease have the resources they need so we can get to the outcome we all want.
