Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is standing behind one of his former quarterbacks after a public scandal that led to him leaving his job.In recent days, CBS mutually parted ways with former color analyst Tony Romo. The two sides negotiated a settlement of Romo’s remaining contract, which led to their inevitable split after the ex-Cowboys star was arrested for OWI in Wisconsin.Speaking on 105.3FM The Fan in Dallas, Jones addressed the situation with his former signal caller and supported him.’Tony is one of the most valued relationships that I have on a personal basis,’ Jones said in one of his twice-weekly appearances on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas. ‘I love him and I’m sorry that he’s — I’m sorry this has evolved this way this year because I enjoyed him so much, in what he could bring to the NFL and, frankly, I was proud of him as a former Cowboy.’Now, having said all of that, he’s just getting started. He really is… I say that with all sincerity. He’s just getting started. And he certainly has… made some mistakes. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones defended his former franchise star, Tony Romo (seen in 2011) Jones believes that no one has a ‘better future’ in the league despite his recent arrest Romo and CBS recently agreed to a mutual departure after he was suspended by the network’I can’t look in my mirror without seeing what can happen when you [are] experiencing mistakes. But he realizes that there’s an area of his life that he wants to do better in. And that’s been said ad nauseam publicly. ‘He’s got great opportunity ahead of him. I don’t know of anyone — period — that has a better future than Tony Romo. And I’m excited for him. He’s not only got great talent but he’s a hell of a man.’Romo’s future is up in the air as the fallout from his Wisconsin arrest continues. He blamed a ‘dependence on pain medication’ after multiple back surgeries left him with ‘constant, debilitating pain’ and said ‘my efforts to get off those medications led to an over-reliance on alcohol.’The 46-year-old was placed on leave indefinitely by CBS, who promoted No.2 analyst JJ Watt into Romo’s role alongside Jim Nantz for the start of the new NFL season.Romo has now stepped away from his $18million-a-year contract and left the network, sparking questions over his next move.A source close to Romo and CBS Sports told the Daily Mail: ‘Tony has accepted it, though not the ideal scenario; he sees it as a wakeup call and a reason to get better. It is what needs to be done. To get healthy is now his mission. ‘He believes he will eventually get a second chance if he wants it, but he could also ride off into the sunset because he has enough money to not have to do anything ever again.
