Jamie Carragher was the target of a string of bankruptcy jokes during CBS Sports’ first Champions League show of the season on Tuesday, less than a week after HMRC took action over the Liverpool legend’s substantial unpaid tax bill. HMRC filed a petition at the High Court in London last Wednesday to have the Sky Sports pundit and former England footballer declared bankrupt over an unpaid tax bill which is reported to be in the region of £700,000 to £800,000.CBS Sports, whose Champions League coverage is renowned for putting humour front and centre, wasted no time poking fun at Carragher over the matter on Tuesday.Host Kate Abdo, who was joined by Carragher, Micah Richards and Thierry Henry in the CBS Sports studio, said: ‘A busy hot summer can be taxing. Not for this man, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher. Well, haven’t we all,’ the former England international joked to the amusement of his peers.Last week, a spokesperson for HMRC told Daily Mail Sport: ‘We take a supportive approach to dealing with customers who have tax debts and do everything we can to help those who engage with us to get out of debt, such as offering instalment plans. We only petition for bankruptcy as a last resort.’HMRC added that it does not comment on individual cases. Carragher, 48, is listed as a director at four firms and as a LLP Member for another. As well as covering the Champions League with the US network, he is a regular pundit on Sky Sports and appears routinely on the Stick To Football podcast, run by Gary Neville’s media business The Overlap. A spokesperson for Carragher told Daily Mail Sport: ‘This is a private tax matter that should have been resolved sooner, and the appropriate steps are being taken today to settle it. ‘It is understood that the matter will not proceed any further and will be resolved imminently.’ The BBC reported that the bill is around £700,000 to £800,000.
