Katie Boulter has shared details from inside her wedding to fellow tennis star Alex de Minaur as the newly minted British No1 prepares for her first Grand Slam in New York after her Tuscany nuptials. 30-year-old Boulter and her long-time partner De Minaur were married in a small ceremony in Leicestershire on the final Sunday of Wimbledon to ensure that Boulter’s grandfather – who suffers from dementia – could attend the wedding. It was followed by a larger event in Italy, with the couple celebrating their reception at the exclusive Borgo Santo Pietro luxury hotel. But ahead of starting her travails at the US Open this weekend, Boulter revealed that the picture-perfect wedding, which featured in British Vogue, was not without its moments of chaos. ‘There were just little things (that went wrong),’ Boulter admitted. ‘Honestly, it was like Alex lost a button on his shirt. ‘My brother had to sew it on for him, as if he knows how to sew? It was just little things like that that you take for granted. You’re like, everything will be perfect. Of course I’m going to have all the buttons on my shirt. What could possibly go wrong? And then obviously things like that happen. So they were scrambling for safety pins just to be able to keep that on. Just things that I think make the story even funnier. ‘I wouldn’t change it because there was a lot of (people) thinking on their feet,’ Boulter added. ‘And it bonded everyone even more so. It’s something that we can look back on and laugh about now. So I think it was perfect.’ Boulter had also pointed out that the soaring temperatures of a European heatwave in Italy also took them by surprise. ‘It was hot. It was boiling,’ she continued. ‘It was in Tuscany. It was maybe a little too hot, if I’m honest. ‘But it was very special. We were outside and then went indoors for a nice dinner. And it was just great to have everyone in one place. It was something that never happens. So it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for us.’ The player confirmed that she will be keeping her maiden name for tennis, and Boulter added that she does not plan to wear her wedding ring on court. ‘Not during matches. I can’t,’ she said. ‘No. I learned from Andy (Murray). I’m not going to do that.’Former three-time Grand Slam champion Murray famously played with his wedding ring tied to his laces in a bid to have the token with him without it interfering with his grip. Boulter and De Minaur had earlier held a small ceremony in Leicestershire to accommodate members of her familyBut near-disaster struck in 2021 when Murray’s shoes were stolen – with the ring attached – after he left them to dry under his car at Indian Wells. Both the ring and shoes were later returned after Murray appealed for help on social media. Boulter overtook her compatriot Emma Raducanu as the best British woman on the tour after the latter has seen her summer cut short as she recovers from the stress fracture that kept her out of Wimbledon. Since her wedding, she has played just three singles matches at Washington, the Canadian Open, and Cincinnati, recording a string of first-round losses. Boulter will begin her journey in the Big Apple against home favourite Carol Lee when the Grand Slam begins in earnest on Sunday.
