Houston Texans quarterback CJ Stroud enters the 2026 season with an uncertain future in the Lone Star State.According to ESPN, the team is willing to put Stroud in the upper-echelon of quarterbacks making at least $50 million a season. However, Stroud appears to be betting on himself – and a potential bidding war for free-agent quarterbacks – as he eyes free agency in 2028.By waiting to sign a deal, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler wrote, Stroud can let the free-agent quarterback market dictate his price in 18 months, when two-time MVP Lamar Jackson’s contract with Baltimore is also set to expire.There are currently seven NFL players – all quarterbacks – set to make at least $50 million in salary this season. Stroud, meanwhile, ranks 478th in NFL salary with a $5.7 million payout for 2026, according to Spotrac.General manager Nick Caserio said Tuesday that if the club can’t reach an agreement with Stroud before the September 13 opener against Buffalo that it will pause all talks until next offseason. Houston already picked up Stroud’s fifth-year option, meaning it has him under team control through 2027.The Daily Mail has sought comment from Stroud’s agent and team spokespeople. The group is led by star defensive end Will Anderson Jr., who signed a three-year, $150 million contract extension this offseason that made him the highest paid non-quarterback in NFL history.Also returning is veteran defensive end Danielle Hunter after he and Anderson combined for 27 sacks last year. The already fearsome pass rush got a boost with the return of Jadeveon Clowney, who spent his first five seasons in Houston after being selected first overall in 2014. Though Houston’s pass rush leads the defense, the rest of the unit is also strong and features depth at linebacker and an elite secondary led by two-time All-Pro cornerback Derek Stingley.
