The DP World Tour is exploring a contingency option in Spain in the unlikely event that they have to relocate their season-ending championship due to the conflict in the Middle East.Bosses at the circuit’s Wentworth HQ still intend to stage their Tour Championship in Dubai in the second week of November, but are considering alternatives to cover the possibilities of escalations in the military activity between Israel, Iran and the United States.Daily Mail Sport understands that Real Club de Golf Sotogrande in Cadiz, southern Spain, has been discussed internally as a back-up plan, along with clubs in Portugal. The course at Sotogrande has previously hosted the DP World Tour’s Andalucia Masters.Tour sources stress a switch is currently unlikely, but are actively monitoring the situation, which would also affect the Abu Dhabi Championship a week prior to their stop in Dubai.The issue became a talking point among a number of golf’s elite at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth last week.World No 4 Matt Fitzpatrick, who won the Tour Championship in Dubai in 2025, was most vocal in explaining his concerns. He said: ‘As things stand right now, I would say I’m not that comfortable. Rory McIlroy has suggested he is ‘looking forward’ to going back to the Middle East’It would feel a little bit weird, given what I’m reading elsewhere. Things can change overnight, I’m sure. I think it seems to be going down that path of things are getting better. I’ve looked on the UK [government] website, I know they changed it from essential travel only to one step better than that.’If the tour do go, I’m sure they have had the best advice possible on what that looks like. As things stand, I wouldn’t necessarily be too keen on going. I know there’s been discussions on what Formula One is doing. I’ve heard they might not be going there, so it begs the question, would we, I guess.’You’ve only got to look at the hotel that got hit (by a missile) earlier this year.
