Stephen Clegg topped the podium twice at the Paralympics in Paris two years ago but insists that was nothing compared to the joy he felt after striking gold in Glasgow last night.The 30-year-old stormed to a brilliant victory in the 50m freestyle S13 final for visually-impaired swimmers.It was a family affair for Clegg whose older brother James also featured in the race and finished fifth.Their Commonwealth Games commitments meant the siblings had to miss the wedding last weekend of their older sister Libby, the former Paralympic and world sprint champion who won 100m track gold at Hampden back at Glasgow 2014.Clegg’s parents managed to make their way to the Tollcross International Swimming Centre in time to watch their sons in action as Stephen achieved an upgrade on the silver medal he claimed in the same event four years ago in Birmingham.‘It’s special beyond words,’ he said. ‘The only way I can describe it is with my actions on the podium. I’m not normally an emotive person. I’m emotional inside but I don’t normally show them. Stephen Clegg with his gold medal after winning a final also contested by his brother ‘But I was really struggling to contain myself, I had a couple of wobbles on the podium, a couple of tears in my eyes.‘The only other experience I can compare it with is when I won gold in Paris but, honestly, I think this is a more special moment for me.‘To do a performance I had no expectation of doing, I think I swam beyond myself there. The reason I was able to do that was because I was in front of a home crowd with my team-mates, family and my girlfriend.‘This is not just my gold medal, it’s theirs as well. I’m nothing without my team. When I’m feeling sorry for myself, wanting to pack it in after a few bad swims in a row, they give me a wake-up call and get me back in the game.‘Was it worth missing Libby’s wedding for this? I was actually very lucky, because she had the signature ceremony on the 15th of this month in Edinburgh and I was there. So she did that for me just before I came up to holding camp, which was nice. I wasn’t completely left out and feel I got to be part of the more intimate part of it.‘It was a three-day wedding, so my parents were still there on Sunday. They travelled up today. I’d like to thank all the family who persuaded me to come back.‘It was definitely worth missing Libby’s wedding for — I had to do this. I’m going to keep going. I’m pleased for Stephen, of course I am.’
