Giants star Cam Skattebo reveals he considered RETIRING after suffering horror ankle injury in his rookie year

New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo has revealed he contemplated retiring from football after suffering a horror ankle injury during his rookie year. Skattebo’s first season in the NFL ended prematurely after he suffered a brutal ankle dislocation in a Week 8 rivalry matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles. The 24-year-old managed to keep himself busy by attending a handful of other sports events – such as his WWE cameo – while the Giants struggled without him.Skattebo is back in action now and expected to start Week 1 for New York when they take on the Dallas Cowboys in their season opener. However, the running back has now revealed that things could have been very different, candidly admitting he considered walking away from the sport altogether. Speaking to Kay Adams on The Up & Adams Show, Skattebo said: ‘Coming out of college and going into the NFL, I gave myself one rule; if I ever got a major injury I was done playing. And that happened seven games into my career. It sucked.  Giants running back Cam Skattebo has revealed he considered retiring from football Skattebo suffered a horrific ankle injury just seven games into his debut NFL season’I think that really helped me find who I am as a player and as a person. I was able to sit at home for 14 hours a day, doing absolutely nothing, for weeks on end.’Asked if he genuinely thought about retiring, he continued: ‘Yeah, definitely. I would say probably a month in [he gave it serious consideration]. The first month was kind of like, ‘Damn, do I really want to do this?’ And then, you know, it was seven games. ‘I was like, “I got to go back and play”. If it was like the end of the year, and I was like, “Okay, I’m over this” [then maybe] but I didn’t feel that way at all.’I think that gave me an extra step of finding that deep place and coming out of a hole that I didn’t know I could come out of. So, I’m appreciative of it, and I’m excited to see what I can build off it.’As mentioned earlier, Skattebo made sure to capitalize on his newfound NFL stardom after suffering the injury, making a number of cameos at different sports events. Most recently, Skattebo sparked uproar after attempting – and failing – a backflip at Fanatics Fest in New York City back in July. The Giants star failed to stick the landing, instead slipping backwards with his surgically repaired right leg twisting as he fell, leaving Giants fans sweating.  Giants head coach John Harbaugh had a clear message for Skattebo after seeing the second-year running back’s botched backflip. Skattebo is back in action for the Giants and expected to start Week 1 against the Cowboys Skattebo left Giants fans horrified after stumbling while performing a backflip at Fanatics Fest’My reaction was – I haven’t talked to him yet; I’m going to talk to him, I’m sure – my reaction was this: Dude, at least stick it,’ the laughing first-year Giants head coach told the Bleav in Giants podcast. ‘I mean, land the thing if you’re going to do it, you know? That was my first reaction.’ Meanwhile, during a following Fanatics event, Skattebo told Sirius XM: ‘Yeah, I mean, so I’ve been doing backflips since I was like four years old, so it’s natural to me.’I’m gonna address the elephant,’ he said, interrupting himself. ‘I will not hurt myself before the season.’Yeah, so what happened was, I don’t know if you guys know WWE or not, those floors are bouncy,’ he continued. ‘So when I took off, I was mid-air, like, holy cow, I’m not gonna land this, I’m way too high. ‘Landed, but it had too much cushion. It wasn’t a stiff, firm ground. So that’s why I kinda like went back, safely landed, got back up, was good to go.’So, nothing came out from that. I’m perfectly fine. Nothing happened. We’re good.’
