Celtic boss Martin O’Neill has hit out at individuals wearing balaclavas who turned up at a meeting between directors and supporters.Staged at the Greenock Celtic Supporters’ Club on Monday evening, the event afforded around 120 fans a rare chance to grill the hierarchy on the direction the club is taking.Chief executive Michael Nicholson, finance director Chris McKay and interim chairman Brian Wilson attended — with O’Neill also venturing along after learning that it was scheduled to take place. And while the manager was pleased to have participated in a ‘robust’ discussion, he was horrified that those executives who’d agreed to front up were abused by certain fans — believed to be ultras — who hid their faces as they congregated outside. It’s understood that they weren’t permitted access to the meeting room itself but it was still a worrying sight amid the ongoing unrest surrounding the club, with the threat of more protests ahead of Thursday night’s Europa League clash with Besiktas at Celtic Park. The flashpoint came weeks after Dermot Desmond, the club’s largest shareholder, had tennis balls thrown at him by protesters as he participated in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St Andrews.‘There was a bit of a debacle beforehand,’ said the Northern Irishman. ‘But the meeting itself was, I think you could use the word robust, yes, firm, but very orderly questioning. O’Neill admitted he was disappointed to see individuals wearing balaclavas outside meeting‘(We were) trying to give the answers that (were) not necessarily what people are looking for, because I’m not so sure that will ever reach a satisfactory stage for a while anyway.‘But, yeah, it was really interesting and an experience.‘Was everything answered by the board and myself to their satisfaction? Well, you’d have to ask the people there at the time.‘There was no shouting. It wasn’t like (last year’s) AGM. The shouting had taken place before the meeting, you know? I mean, you are aware that people with balaclavas came up to the thing? To me, I think that was the saddest thing.‘Would I have ever, in any day, ever thought that Celtic fans would be clothed in balaclavas before a meeting? Even if they were disapproving of what was happening, I think that’s really disappointing.‘I do find it hard to get my head round that kind of stuff.’The meeting came amid speculation that the club’s forthcoming annual general meeting would be held remotely.Last year’s AGM was cut short by then chairman, Peter Lawwell, after it was disrupted by individuals shouting and brandishing red cards. O’Neill attended meeting with Celtic fans in Greenock where he said questioning was robustIt’s understood, though, that the meeting will go ahead as normal in a suite at Celtic Park — with O’Neill expecting to attend.‘That’s early December, isn’t it?’ he asked. ‘So, I would expect to be at it as a manager. I assume that Brendan (Rodgers) was (present previously), so you’d be at it.‘If given an opportunity to answer some of the things and if they want to hear from the manager, I would have no problem.‘I hope it’s similar to what Monday night was in terms of the questions and fairness and not falling into what it was last year.’While no minutes were taken at the meeting in Greenock, there’s been speculation that O’Neill confirmed he’d be leaving the club in the summer — despite a one-year option remaining.Although he didn’t confirm this on Wednesday, he said: ‘I can’t imagine anybody asking me back. Seriously, I can’t imagine that happening.‘Listen, I didn’t come in here today to give a final word at this minute.’
