Fulham head coach Alvaro Arbeloa has been charged with misconduct by the FA for comments made during his post-match press conference after his side’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United. The two-time Champions League-winning right back landed himself in hot water with the FA after suggesting that officials were biased towards Manchester United at Craven Cottage on Sunday – and implying that they were reacting to decisions which went against United in the Manchester derby the previous weekend, when they lost to a goal by City’s Erling Haaland that officials later conceded should have been ruled out for offside. An FA statement on Wednesday afternoon read: ‘Alvaro Arbeloa has been charged with misconduct for comments made after the Premier League fixture between Fulham and Manchester United on Sunday September 20. ‘It is alleged that the Fulham manager acted in an improper manner by making comments in a post-match interview that imply bias and/or question the integrity of a match official.’It added that Arbeloa has until Thursday to respond. In an interview with Sky Sports after the game Arbeloa, 43, stated that ‘every decision was for them’ and that ‘after the game against Man City they [won’t] let Manchester United lose here’. Arbeloa was speaking after his side conceded a late equaliser at home to Manchester UnitedArbeloa referred specifically to a contentious decision made by referee Peter Bankes, 44, towards the end of the game in which a relatively soft free-kick was given against Fulham for a foul on Harry Maguire that led to Matheus Cunha’s late equaliser. Arbeloa implied that a player of Maguire’s stature should not be going down from such minimal contact, saying ‘the foul against Maguire, a guy that is 100 kilos?’ Arbeloa’s anger with the officials may have also been amplified by United not receiving a single booking throughout the game, despite some contentious challenges, and Fulham receiving three yellows for their own offences.Fulham dropped two points late in the game due to Matheus Cunha’s deflected equaliser, and their manager believed they ‘deserved more’.
