Former Palace boss Glasner leads race to take over at Forest

Oliver Glasner is among the leading contenders to be Nottingham Forest’s next boss with Vitor Pereira shown the door within a year left on his contract.Pereira was Forest’s fourth manager last season and kept them in the Premier League, but Daily Mail Sport understands he may now be replaced by former Crystal Palace coach Glasner in a stunning move that has frustrated Selhurst Park officials given the recent history between the clubs.Pereira was expected to have talks over a new contract after his success in helping retain Forest’s top-flight status. But now he has confirmed his exit, and Glasner looks in a strong position to be the club’s next head coach. If Glasner was to move to Forest, it is unlikely to be well-received by Palace fans. There is little love lost between the clubs after Forest replaced Palace in last season’s Europa League.UEFA ruled that because American businessman John Textor had influence over both Palace and Lyon, they could not compete in the same European competition. Palace were demoted to the Conference League, to Forest’s benefit.Glasner was a strong candidate to move to the City Ground in December 2023 when Steve Cooper departed, but on that occasion the club chose to hire Nuno Espirito Santo.Indeed, one source suggested to Daily Mail Sport before the end of last season that Forest would sack Pereira if Glasner showed any indication he was willing to join the Midlands club. The Austrian is currently without a club having left Crystal Palace at the end of last season. Vitor Pereira could depart Nottingham Forest in a shock development Oliver Glasner is among the candidates being considered to replace PereiraGlasner delivered unprecedented success at Selhurst Park, leading the club to the FA Cup in 2025 and the Conference League in 2026. By the team Palace lifted their first European trophy, they knew it would be Glasner’s last season.Even by Forest’s standards, removing Pereira is a surprise. When he arrived in February, Forest had already dismissed three coaches since the start of the 2025-26 season – Nuno, Ange Postecoglou and Sean Dyche. As for Pereira, a third spell in Saudi Arabia could be next. His representatives are believed to have been sounded out by Pro League club Al-Hilal, who are not the only ones interested. His Forest contract contained a clause allowing either party to cut short his time before the end of June. Reports have suggested he was sacked by email at 11.58pm on Tuesday – just two minutes before the month ended.Pereira told BBC Sport: ‘Although this decision came as a complete surprise to me and without any warning, I fully respect the club’s right to make the decisions it believes are best for its future.’Naturally, I am disappointed and saddened. I truly believed in what we were building together, and I leave with a sense of pride in everything we achieved over the past months.’Together, we enjoyed a memorable end to the season. We secured the club’s Premier League status, reached the semi-finals of the Europa League, and created moments that will stay with me forever.’Most importantly, I saw a group of players grow in confidence, belief and togetherness. Watching them develop, fight for one another and represent this club with passion has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career.’I leave Nottingham Forest with no bitterness or resentment – only respect, gratitude and wonderful memories.’Football is full of unexpected moments, and while this chapter has ended sooner than I expected, I will always look back on my time here with pride and affection.’This is a special club, and I sincerely hope it continues to grow and achieve great things.’
