Former Arsenal midfielder Francis Coquelin was taken to hospital after a frightening clash of heads in a league match in France.Coquelin, now 35, had been making just his second appearance for Ligue 2 side Laval on Friday night.The midfielder went down in the early stages of the match after clashing heads with Wilitty Younoussa, who was making his debut for Nantes.Medical staff were called onto the pitch to attend to the players, with Coquelin and Younoussa both ultimately forced to leave the pitch on stretchers.Reports in France stated that Coquelin was conscious as he was taken to hospital but has undergone a scan amid concerns he had suffered a broken eye socket. ‘After his heavy collision with Younoussa, Coquelin was taken to the hospital but conscious,’ French journalist Raphael Faurie-Pacaud wrote. Coquelin had rejoined Laval in the summer, with the midfielder having started his career at the club.The 35-year-old had been part of the youth set-up at Laval, before being signed to Arsenal’s academy.Coquelin went on to play 160 times for Arsenal and won the FA Cup twice, while he also had loan spells at Lorient, Freiburg and Charlton.He spent three years at Valencia after leaving Arsenal, before a four-year spell at Villarreal, where he was part of their Europa League winning team in 2020-21.Coquelin spent the last two seasons at Nantes and was facing his former side on Friday for the first time when his injury occurred.Laval ultimately earned a 2-1 victory in the Ligue 2 match following a stoppage time winner.
