Fernandez insists Rangers can bounce back from Euro heartache and win the TREBLE

Manny Fernandez has revealed manager Derek McInnes has been urging his Rangers squad to get over their European disasters by setting their sights on a domestic Treble. The Ibrox outfit tumbled out of both the Champions League and Europa League in the qualifying stages and are in the process of rebuilding shattered confidence with three straight league wins now on the board. However, Fernandez has admitted that McInnes is contributing to that rise in self-belief by making it clear to the players that a special campaign is still within their grasp ahead of an Old Firm double-header that kicks off on Sunday with a Premier Sports Cup quarter-final at Ibrox.’Obviously, we had a bad start,’ said the centre-back. ‘Not being in Europe is difficult, so the manager speaking to us showed us that there are still three trophies that are available to win.’We can be confident in that we have the possibility of doing something great. I feel that him showing us that and showing us how we need to get the fans and everyone behind us is the positive he has brought.’The togetherness, the leadership groups and the leaders within the team is something the manager has brought to the team.’Rangers recorded a 1-0 home win over Motherwell despite losing skipper Lawrence Shankland, who will be sent for a scan on Monday, in the early stages with a hamstring injury. Manny Fernandez applauds the Ibrox supporters after Rangers’ 1-0 win over MotherwellThey created a number of chances with Fernandez believing it proved that a squad with 14 new additions this summer is beginning to knit together slowly.’One hundred per cent,’ he said. ‘I feel the togetherness is getting better. As a team, maybe our performances have been better since the Aberdeen game. I feel there is more to come.’Also, we have healthy competition for places.’Fernandez also believes that rising confidence will see more chances converted following some of the wastefulness witnessed against Motherwell.’That will come with time,’ he said. ‘I think confidence is a thing as well. We may not have started the best and people’s form is maybe down a bit, but, as long as we are creating chances, that is a good thing.’We know that we will score these chances potentially in the next games.’Fernandez came in for strong criticism in the early weeks of the campaign and admits he has staged some heart-to-hearts with McInnes over bringing more consistency into his decision-making during games.’Maybe it is just concentration in moments,’ he said. ‘We do have chats and it’s small things. Sometimes, they are ones that cause goals to come against us or attacks to come against us and it is about limiting opportunities for teams.’That’s the main thing we talk about.’To be fair, I don’t really look into what is said about me. I just focus on myself. I try to improve and be better every day.’I know when something I have done is bad and I am still growing as a player. I will improve eventually.’Fernandez, now aged 25, is building a partnership at the back with 22-year-old Olwethu Makhanya and sees signs that is beginning to really bear fruit.’It is growing. It is difficult when new people come in and we have had a lot of changes this year,’ he said. ‘I played with a few different centre-backs last season and now there is a new one, so you learn to understand people and I feel like it is growing. Fernandez keeps Motherwell striker Seb Palmer-Houlden at bay’I feel the team is growing as well and that’s what we need. The transfer window is closed, everything settles around the club, all the anxiety about what is going on.’I think everyone in the team now understands this person is going to be beside them for the foreseeable future and I think that is what you need as a team. Uncertainty over who is going to be here is a bit difficult.’Fernandez came off late in the win over Motherwell but insists he will be fine for Wednesday’s visit of St Mirren.’I just had a little niggle and didn’t want to risk too much,’ he said. ‘I just want to leave myself in a situation where I feel better for the next game.’
