Dodgers consider benching Shohei Ohtani in shock move as they cling on to World Series hopes

With his season as a pitcher already over due to issues with his left knee and right biceps, Los Angeles Dodgers two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani could be relegated to the dugout when the National League Championship Series resumes Wednesday. The Dodgers now trail the MLB-best Milwaukee Brewers 2-0 in the best-of-seven series after falling 7-4 on Monday. Afterwards, LA manager Dave Roberts acknowledged Ohtani’s struggles at the plate, which he seemed to blame on the 32-year-old’s mounting injuries.’Yeah, I mean, obviously it hasn’t been good,’ manager Dave Roberts told The Athletic on Monday. ‘He doesn’t feel great. I think for me, it’s having a conversation with him [on Tuesday], kind of try to figure out what’s best for him, what’s best for us. He certainly has earned that conversation and deserves it.’The reigning two-time NL MVP has just three hits – all singles – to go with three walks over six playoff games. And whereas he had a combined 24 postseason RBIs while powering the Dodgers to World Series titles in 2024 and 2025, Ohtani has yet to drive in a single run this October. In fact, Ohtani has not homered since August 18, when he went deep against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.Ohtani’s numbers for the season remain impressive, but are still a far cry from his recent success. In 135 regular-season games, Ohtani had 30 home runs and 81 RBIs to go with a .275 average and .377 on-base percentage. Most noticeably, his slugging percentage fell to.512 in 2026 after he posted marks of.654,.646 and.622 over the previous three seasons. Ohtani has not homered since August 18, when he went deep against the Colorado Rockies The reigning NL MVP has three singles and three walks over six playoff games in 2026He spent much of September on  the Injured List (IL) before being activated on September 23.Still, entering the postseason, Ohtani was admittedly below 100 percent, physically.’I haven’t been able to get a good grasp of the root cause of all this,’ Ohtani said through an interpreter before the Division Series. ‘I think that process is going to happen during the offseason when I’m going to have a little bit more time to be able to address it. But as of now, it’s something I’m just going to have to manage.’Ohtani was pitching well this season before being shut down in July. Although, aside from a sparkling 1.79 ERA, his declining strikeout rate and strikeout-to-walk ratio may have given LA some reason for concern. The Dodgers haven’t given themselves much room for error in Game 3, where they will face southpaw Robert Gasser. Roberts, meanwhile, is calling on two-time former Cy Young winner, Blake Snell, who is coming off a rough start against Atlanta in the National League Division Series (NLDS).  The Dodgers now trail the MLB-best Brewers 2-0 in the best-of-seven series after falling 7-4 on Monday in Milwaukee, where Shohei Ohtani was a constant target of the local fans Snell did have some groin problems at the end of the season, but Roberts dismissed that as a concern after pulling the lefty in the fourth inning of LA’s loss to Atlanta in Game 2 of the NLDS. ‘No, no, it wasn’t that. He just was fighting himself with his delivery all game,’ Roberts said. ‘I think in total, didn’t have fastball command, didn’t have slider command and the changeup wasn’t there. He was pulling it. I think that just overall it wasn’t the groin. He just wasn’t sharp.’ Snell also pitched well in 2026 after returning to the mound in May following elbow surgery. In eight starts since his return, the 33-year-old went 4-0 with a 1.13 ERA and 50 strikeouts across 39.2 innings of work.
