‘Dirtbag’ Conor McGregor deserved ‘karma’ of horror UFC knee injury, claims his fiercest US rival

Dustin Poirier has laid into Conor McGregor after his disastrous UFC comeback, insisting the Irishman’s injury was ‘karma’ for being a ‘dirtbag.’After five years away from the sport, McGregor made his long-awaited return against Max Holloway at UFC 329 in Las Vegas. But the 38-year-old injured his knee in the opening seconds after sprinting out and throwing a kick that missed his rival.’I am beyond dark here,’ McGregor said after the fight was called off just 69 seconds into the first round. ‘I can only describe it as hell.’ But Poirier, who has fought the Irishman three times in the Octagon, had little sympathy for McGregor.’I thought it couldn’t have happened to a better guy,’ Poirier said on the ‘Deep Waters’ podcast on Monday.  Conor McGregor’s long-awaited comeback ended in disaster at UFC 329 on Saturday night  Max Holloway unleashed a barrage of punches down on the wounded McGregor in Las Vegas ‘That injury couldn’t have happened to a better guy… this guy is a dirtbag,’ Dustin Poirier said’That injury couldn’t have happened to a better guy. Earlier this week, he said karma is a mirror, and it definitely is… this guy is a dirtbag.’The Irishman’s long exile from the UFC included injury withdrawals, an 18-month suspension for missed drug tests – backdated to September 2024 and only expiring this year – and a Dublin civil jury finding him liable in November 2024 for the sexual assault of Nikita Hand, for which he was ordered to pay $260,000 in damages. In Las Vegas, McGregor’s injury sparked conspiracy theories among some fans, who insisted the 38-year-old must have been hurt before returning to the Octagon for the first time since 2021. Suspicions arose after footage emerged of McGregor, draped in an Irish flag, hopping after pulling his trainers off just minutes before the fight started. But the Irishman rubbished those claims, insisting in a statement that the injury ‘came out of nowhere’. Nevertheless, Poirier questioned McGregor’s decision to start the fight with a headkick. ‘I don’t know if it was nervous energy or what. I don’t know why you would start a fight like that,’ Poirier said. ‘It’s like a Hail Mary, you’re throwing a Hail Mary to start a 25-minute fight. I don’t understand what was going on with that.’ Poirier beat McGregor twice when they met in 2021, with the Irishman breaking his leg in their third fight. Seven years earlier, McGregor beat his American rival at UFC 178. Between 2014 and 2021, McGregor and Poirier met three times, with Poirier winning twice ‘My head gasket is gone. Destroyed. I had no injury / injuries going into the fight,’ he saidMcGregor has one fight remaining on his deal with the UFC and Holloway left the door open to a trilogy with the 38-year-old.’My head gasket is gone. Destroyed. I had no injury / injuries going into the fight,’ McGregor said.’I was throwing kicks, planted and jumping, all throughout camp as well as backstage before the fight. This came out of nowhere. I am beyond dark here. I can only describe it as hell.’McGregor later added: ‘I was so sharp and so ready for this fight I cannot believe what has happened. The talk of me being off while walking into the fight is nonsense. I was calm, ready, and confident. I am in shock what has taken place. ‘The devil is literally staring at me right in front of my face here. I am not engaging. I will be at church tomorrow. I will overcome this. I will not be deterred. I will return.’
