Derek McInnes has welcomed the prospect of a blockbuster Old Firm derby after Rangers were drawn to face Celtic in the quarter-finals of the Premier Sports Cup.Rangers thrashed St Mirren 5-1 at Ibrox yesterday as McInnes finally secured his first victory as manager at the fifth time of asking. With Celtic beating Dundee United 4-0 at Tannadice on Saturday, the bitter rivals were the first two names out of the hat when the draw for the last eight was made last night. The tie will be played at Ibrox on the weekend of September 12/13, just a week before they clash again in the Premiership at Celtic Park. There were shameful scenes when the teams met in the Scottish Cup at Ibrox back in March, with rival fans invading the pitch at full-time and throwing missiles. With this tie falling under SPFL regulations, the general agreement is that an allocation of around five per cent, as opposed to 20 per cent in the Scottish Cup, should be made available to the away team. Derek McInnes was thrilled and relieved to finally register his first win as Rangers manager‘I am delighted to be at home, obviously it’s a mouth-watering tie,’ said McInnes shortly after the draw had been made. ‘If you’re going to win the trophy, you need to beat the better teams.‘Obviously with Celtic coming here, I think it means we’ll face them two weeks in a row. It will be eagerly anticipated by everybody and it’ll be something to look forward to.‘Hopefully by the time that game comes around, we’ll have a few more wins and the squad will be a lot more settled and a bit stronger than it is at the minute. Because it will need to wrestle with a team like Celtic.’McInnes was under a lot of scrutiny heading into yesterday’s clash with Saints after going four matches without a win at the start of his tenure. In particular, the Europa League exit to Jagiellonia Bialystok on Thursday night was a hammer blow which heaped pressure on the new manager. But Rangers were much improved yesterday and won with plenty to spare thanks to goals from Ryan Naderi, Vanja Dragojevic, Djeidi Gassama, James Penrice and Ross McCausland.McInnes changed system to a 4-3-3 and was pleased to see his team carry a far greater threat at the top end of the pitch. James Penrice is hailed by his Rangers team-mates after scoring a goal on his debut‘There were so many positives for us,’ said McInnes. ‘I thought it was a strong start, we scored two goals inside 20 minutes, we should have maybe scored more.‘We looked a threat on counter-attack but we also built the game pretty well too. It’s quite ironic, in the first game competitive game I’ve gone with one striker and we looked like more of a threat.‘I thought we were very energetic in midfield, I thought our wider players contributed well. The game should have been put to bed.‘St Mirren then scored a good goal and, for the period after that, we weren’t great. We can’t allow one goal to rock us like that. But we stepped up again in the second half and got the job done.‘For the first time, I probably enjoyed being manager of Rangers for a period in the first half. And then we lost the goal and I didn’t enjoy it again. But I’m just glad to get a win.‘It was a great debut for James [Penrice] as well. He has a real natural enthusiasm and I think that rubbed off on others around him. He also has really good quality, which he showed with his goal and assist.’ Ryan Naderi got the Premier Sports Cup victory off to a flying start with a ninth-minute goalRangers will now face Jablonec in a Europa Conference League qualifier at Ibrox on Thursday night, with McInnes hopeful of adding a couple of new signings by the time they face the Czechs. He also revealed that Ben Godfrey could yet play some part in the tie, most probably in the second leg the following week, as he nears a comeback from a hamstring strain.‘I think Ben will be registered in the European squad as it stands,’ said McInnes. ‘He might not be fully fit for Thursday, but I think he will certainly be at the second leg as it stands.‘In terms of new players coming in, just the forward areas in general, we know what we need to get. We’re still working really hard to do that.’
