The 18-year-old victim in a fatal stabbing in Providence, Rhode Island has been identified as UMass Dartmouth running back Marvins Antoine.A suspect is in custody, according to Providence police, who say another UMass Dartmouth player was also stabbed, but suffered only non-life-threatening injuries. The surviving player, 19, has not been identified publicly.Providence Police Major David Lapatin told WPRI that the incident took place shortly after midnight early Saturday morning in a Wendy’s parking lot near a club, Mezzo Lounge. That club had become overcrowded, according to Lapatin, who said customers were being turned away at the door.It was then that a fight broke out in the Wendy’s parking lot on Charles Street near the West River. Antoine suffered stab wounds to the chest before being transported to Rhode Island Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.’We are heartbroken to share that first-year student and football team member Marvins Antoine passed away this morning following an incident in Providence, Rhode Island,’ read a statement from the Division III football team. ‘Our thoughts are with Marvins’ family, friends, classmates, and teammates.’A product of Fall River, Massachusetts’ B.M.C. Durfee High School, Antoine was only at UMass Dartmouth for a short time when he was killed. I had [the] privilege to coach [basketball to] Marv for several years. ‘On our car rides to and from basketball games, we would talk about his life goals and things he wanted to accomplish in his life. It is tragic that he will never accomplish those goals and I will never be able to take those rides with him ever again.’He had so much life ahead of him… You are loved dearly and will forever remain in my [heart].’In the school’s statement statement, university spokespeople downplayed any dangers to other students. ‘Please be assured that we have no reason to believe there is any ongoing threat to the UMass Dartmouth community,’ he wrote. ‘The appropriate law enforcement agencies are investigating the incident, and because this is an ongoing investigation, we cannot share more details at this time.’UMass Dartmouth played hours before the incident on Friday evening, falling to 1-2 with a loss to Framingham State. Antoine did not see any action in the game. Antoine’s former teammates are scheduled to play again on Saturday when Bridgton Academy visits Dartmouth.
