Arsenal eased their way to a 4-1 victory over Girona in the club’s first pre-season match of the summer as they beat Girona on Saturday.In their first match since the Champions League final, the Gunners were without the likes of Bukayo Saka and David Raya, but could call on stars such as Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyokeres. Gunners’ new man shinesWith all the talk surrounding Vinicius Junior, Arsenal’s signing of Christos Tzolis had gone under the radar.The £34million winger has been the Gunners’ main acquisition of the window thus far, adding to Illan Meslier’s arrival and the loan of Piero Hincapie converted into a permanent deal. New Arsenal signing Christos Tzolis (right) shone on his unofficial debut as he scored for Arsenal against GironaHe started at left wing, the very position Arsenal are still looking to bolster further after the exit of Leandro Trossard.It makes the time to make an impression rather limited for Tzolis, with this opportunity a crucial one.The 24-year-old took it in fairness after slowly easing his way in, assessing the opposition’s backline.A couple of shots were snuffed and attempts to drive forward blocked but, crucially, he kept trying to make in-roads.His goal before half-time fizzed with energy, cutting into the box before hitting a curling strike towards the corner.The ball rebounded off Kai Havertz into the goal, though the strike was attributed to Tzolis.It wasn’t a show-stopping display as such, but his willingness to try and make something happen is an element Arsenal could have done with at times last season when faced with the lowest of low blocks.It’s understood that Tzolis is viewed as an attacker who will grow in influence over time and still has more development to go.From the signs of tonight, though, the Greek will be persistently at Mikel Arteta’s door. Max Dowman (right) was at the forefront of a number of Arsenal’s attacks in the pre-season tieDowman ready for the big timeThe superlatives around Arsenal’s boy wonder continue.At times, Max Dowman was the spearhead of Arsenal’s attack, controlling the tempo with an ease of a player beyond his 16 years of age.Viktor Gyokeres bellowed ‘Max!’ with sheer frustration for losing the ball within ten minutes, though the youngster has a strong psyche. He brushed this aside to assist Kai Havertz with a sublime through ball, leaving the German one-vs-one with the goalkeeper.Later in the second half, the Girona players sat off him, affording Dowman far too much space. He drove to the edge of the box to get a goal of his own, stroking the ball into the net across the turf.Sandwiched between these two moments were a series of dribbles forward and threatening passes. But in an indication of the player’s growing maturity, his work rate off the ball has improved from last season.It has been an area for improvement, Dowman’s pressing not as sustained as required for an Arteta wide man.Here, he put in a real shift, an indication of his attempt to further establish himself in this first team.The margins are fine at this level. And Dowman more than meets them head on. Forgotten man Fabio Vieira, who is for sale, came off the bench in the first-half in SpainThe forgotten manIn the 34th minute, two unexpected names were substituted on: Fabio Vieira and Gabriel Jesus.Vieira last featured for the Gunners in pre-season of 2025, having returned this summer from a loan at Hamburg.He is a player up for sale, which made his appearance slightly bizarre.Vieira did put a shift in, his pressing contributing to Gabriel Jesus’s goal. Though he was taken off 29 minutes later, likely to preserve him for a likely transfer this summer.Jesus had to make do with the bench largely in the previous campaign and tried to make an impact.Those neat dribbling skills were on show but he was subjected to the double substitution treatment, too, exiting on 86 minutes.The Brazilian will have a tricky time trying to get minutes if he is still at Arsenal come September.
